What the heck is it about Real Player? (Yes, I downloaded the latest version ... ). I guess MS video player is about the same ...
Seems like every video I try to watch on the web is ultra-compression artifacty. I know it's "streaming video" or whatever, but fer chrissakes, I have a cable modem. It says it's coming in at several hundred k/sec; seems like it should be much better than what I'm seeing.

It depends on what target bandwidth the video was compressed for.
Check out <http://realguide.real.com/broadband/?s=bbmovies> to see some clips compressed for broadband users.

RealPlayer is the worst media player out there.
I'm on cable too, and streaming rate never stays up and keeps going down (at least on *.real.com servers - which is the majority of stuff out there!) It does seem to depend on the server though.
It's got the best sounding MP3 sound (out of the top 3) though, but when playing MP3 playlists, it *always* runs out of memory, no matter how much I allocate to it. This is something I don't understand, as this is a -stream-.
Also, most times when I try to quit it, it takes about 5(!) secs for it to react. It just annoys the hell out of me.
Here's my order of preference:
- Quicktime 5 (for just about everything)
- Windows Media Player (latest is slower than previous versions though)
- Windows Media Player under Virtual PC (for those files the above 2 can't handle)
- Real Player (if I REALLY need it - which is not often)

I agree! I don't have much RAM (64 MB), but I do have a very fast cable connection and RealPlayer is VERY clunky on my machine (PB-2K). I'm sorry, but nothing I've seen matches QuickTime. It runs smoothly, the video is of high quality, and it is very fast. The interface could use some tweaking, but I'm hoping Apple will take care of that with QT5.

Yes, QT 5 does have major improvements to the interface.
Also, it's able to play MP3 playlists (Yay!), although I've not been able to configure it to play live streams properly.
