I know this question has been asked to death about QT 4 (and I read through most of those posts) but I'm having some trouble with QT 5. I rescued a trailer (Jurassic PArk III) from that invisible temp file and renamed it with a .mov suffix. When I try to open it though, QT 5 crashes with a type 1 error. Otherwise it works well. I do not have QT Pro.

Any suggestions for a fix/work around?

TIA

Is it only the Quicktime Player application that crashes? If so, then try viewing it with your web browser.

Good tip but I get the same problem. I usually use Navigator (which doesn't allow you to open "files" as far as I know) but I gave it a shot with IE. Recognized it as a QT movie, launched the plug in and then IE quit with a Type I error as well.

I downloaded the REF movie and got the HTTP URL using the MakeRefMovie app and then used the wget command from the terminal (Mac OS X) to download the movie. If you're using Mac OS 9, you'll need an application that will do a HTTP download.

Posted this in the other thread but I figured I put it here for the sake of completeness. This works using QT 5 and Navigator (and apparently IE as well).

In the QT control Panel under Browser Plug-in there's an option for saving the files in your cache whenever possible. If you enable this, then the file will show up there and all you have to do is grad it to teh desktop and rename it keeping the .mov suffix.

For whatever reason, using QT 5, you can search out the "invisible" temp file (by custom setting the Sherlock search criteria to "greater than" 10 or 20 Mgs and choosing "made today") but when you drag it to the desktop and append a .mov designation, QT will not recognize the file and it may crash it depending on the file.
