OK.... this is very very very good...
Apple just bought nothing real - the people who make Shake and Tremor
Shake is fast becoming THE No1 compositing system in the High End VFX industry...
my mind is slipping around trying to figure out how apple is going to play this one....
for those of you who dont know, Shake/tremor is a fairly expensive high end script based compositing program..for NT IRIX & Linux
its costs around AUD$20,000 for shake and AUD$100,000 for tremor (including HD hardware)..
its becoming a real favorite because of its flexable node based working system, and its scriptability...
now.. for those who think this will be rolled into FCP... i say very unlikely... the interface and work methods of the 2 programs are diametrically opposed.. but apple releaseing it as is, or slightly modifed is far more likely..
now nothing real announced they were porting the software to OSX early 2001... for a late 2001 release, this, as of yet, hasent happened (but most likely now)
this has a number of interesting implications...
firstly it indicates apple is making a play in the High end VFX market, which means super beefy hardware..
but it also makes me wonder about what will happen to the Shake/Tremor price structure... Apple hasent really been in the business of selling AU$20-100k bits of software... so i wonder if they will be cutting the price in favour of wider market acceptance...
Shake is considered to be THE best compositing software on the market... the only thing stopping it dominating the large volume middle and low ends of the market, is the price (roughly 4-5 times that of After Effects & Combustion)..
so hmm....
thats my 2c for now..
(sorry about the crappy spelling, im just soo excited about this, my 2 fav companies melding) I love runnnig Shake and it eats me up that i have to use a monkeyPC to use it - a mightly hot PC, but a PC)
very interesting...

Very interesting, Apple has been pulling some M$ like tactics as of late. They purchased iTunes, and a few other iApps, wonder what's next... I don't think they would sell a $20,000 application, but they could trim that down to $1,200 and make it work with FCP... Then everyone would want it. I think Apple wants Digital Video... all digital video... and they are wall on their way.

Just to add because I wasn't sure exactly what Nothing Real's software (Shake and Tremor) did exactly. The do video compositing and it's most direct competitor will be Adobe After Effects, I believe. As for the Apple has never had $10K+ pricing, I believe they did initially with WebObjects.

Effects Pro
Effects Studio Pro
Final Effects Pro
Final Studio Effects Pro
Composite Pro
Final Composite Pro
This could get tedious, but I think we're seeing another Pro level app. While cool, I think compositing is just a little too advanced for the iMovie crowed.

Apple is known for MAKING advanced programs novice usable.
I wouldn't be surprised to see apple add some things to iMovie from this (or make a new iApp [iEffect or iMagic]) Then they get two programs from one. One people can play with, and another that people will pay for (the pro version)
When Apple purchased Final Cut Pro, they cut out all the pro junk, simplified the UI and made it iMovie.
We can hope, can't we?

Ok heres the problem I haveing with apple taking over shake(nothing real) shake was made fro vfx artists by VFX artist stream lined for production, im worried that apple will change that because they think the motion blur setting bar should be on the bottom of the screen because it looks better, it was put where it is for a reason Apple dont move it because it does look as good. If they want to make a comsumer VFX iapp go ahead but dont change the pro version.PLEASE. i glad that we will now have a true high end VFX app for the mac, nto to say that you could do VFX before but shake is killer. If they can do another FCP, imovie thing with shake that would be great but leave the proversion alone.personaly I dont see it the comsumer doing compositing( not that I think they couldn't learn they can) compositing is not anything like editing joeys birthday it a time comsuming and some time a frustraing art fourm, and apple can make The UI as user friendly as they want but it wont change the fact the compositing takes practice it's not a matter of how to import the footage, and 20 mins later you have a finished comp, I can see it now on the apple support site( " compositing problems" blue screen matte edges are chattering and perspective doesn't match")dont know I just dont see my mom doing compositing with her imovies maybe it justs me but I dont see it. Again Im not douting that my mom could learn to composite.
But just dont see here doing it
