OK. There are a couple other threads discussing the MPEG4/QuickTime 6 mess/predicament/delay/impasse/struggle/licensing-problem... what ever you want to call it. This thread is more about when.

What I (and many other people) are really interested in is when will QuickTime 6 be available. I guess we can only speculate. Or maybe someone in-the-know (someone who understands the strategies and the sabre rattling) can provide us pawns with a bit more information.

Guesses anyone?

That and it might be a bit better than the slow and nasty player in OS X at the moment.

Cheers Edd

p.s. My guess with a month from now. (By the 14th march)

It's not up to Apple. It's in the hands of the MPEGLA now.

If you're unhappy about the QuickTime 6 situation, voice your displeasure to the MPEGLA.

Did you watch the QuickTime Live stream? If you didn't, I would go and watch that (it is over an hour long) at http://www.apple.com/quicktime . If you aren't a video buff, then no, MPEG4 and QuickTime 6 aren't big deals. But if you do like video and audio, it opens EVERYTHING up.

For me, I am a big movie buff. I would like to be able to encode my movies so that I can watch them on my computer (that I can hook-up to my TV set.)

I also would like to watch the Macworld New York video stream in higher quality. MPEG4 would help in a big way.

Sound-wise, AAC is amazing! WAY better then MP3 quality and smaller/lower bit rate files.

GREAT OSX support.

MPEG2 support (for DVD video quaoity - not such a big deal)

The list goes on and on... Remember, once Quicktime is updated, EVERYTHING takes advantage of it! Word, Illustrator, Photoshop, iMovie, FCP, iTunes, etc, etc, etc...

It's a big deal

celmatic, the only reason that I'm pissed is because my friend (a PeeCee freak) spend around $1800 for a system with Windows 98. He set it up so it was connected to his big Sony TV in the living room. He had a wireless keyboard and mouse so he could play movies, browse etc. He had EVERY epesode of "Friends" on his system and only had a 100GB hard drive. (I'm not a big friends freak, but Simpsons...) The quality wasn't amazing, but it was good. It just got me thinking of how I would do this for my system. At this point, I can't. But once it's here, I'm going to build a little App that let's me take advantage of all of this. With AppleScript and MPEG4 native QT6... the future looks bright...

i'd say within 2 months.
MPEGLA is getting tons and tons of bad publicity from this. if they don't change their licensing policies (check out their lame site, licensing is the first link), no one will ever pay them for anything. if they refuse to change (which would be really really stupid), then i can see apple taking MPEG4 out and releasing a 5.5 updated (with AAC and a couple of the other goodies from 6) while they figure out what to do.

Having 5.5 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, AAC would be cool. I would like to reencode some of my music for iTunes using the new codec, and MPEG2 would be nice for some things, but I really want MPEG4. I have been waiting SO long... like six months from when I saw it last... It was amazing. I have seen DivX on PC's, and it's good, but I know with FCP and a few other apps, I could make it rock... Power Point presentations with full high quality video, Sending movies to my friends... Ahhhh, I hate the MPEGLA...

If Apples stunt bombs, they are in a world of hurt...
