How do I saved a .smi movie file to disk in Quicktime 5 Pro?

For instance, if I go here: <http://www.slamdance.com/anarchy/film_detail.asp?film_id=203>, view the Quicktime time movie, choose to view it in an external application and then do a File - Save As..., I get a 8k .smi file saved to disk, but not the whole movie. How do I get the movie to save to disk??

Mac OS X, Quicktime 5 Pro, IE 5.1 Preview

Thanks, Josh

That's a streaming video I believe. Although .smi files are supposed to be Self Mounting Images...

Here's some info about how to save them:

How to save QT-Streaming movies
Posted By: HotSix

today I've something special (more a hint than a [k] but some people asked my if it's possible
to save a QT-Streaming movie - the answer is yes.

I'll explain it on a public available stream at: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/titan_ae/

Step by step:
1. Start the movie stream (simply click the poster)
2. After the connection is established - save the movie stub to disk (Save as self...). Now you
should have a small movie file on your HD (some kb but not the whole movie)
3. Now comes the "trick": Open this file with Resourcerer/HexEdit or any other utilitie that allow
you to examine the DATA-FORK of the file...Inside the DF you will find a URL - for titan_ae:
'mdatrtsp://a1140.q.kamai.net/7/1140/157/39119a68/stream.qtv.apple.com/
channels/foxmovies/rtsp/050400/titanAE_40.mov'
NOTE: The filename of the movie may depend on your QT Connection-Speed setting -
to get a best quality available you should set your Connection Speed to Intranet/LAN.
4. Now simply copy the important part of the url and paste it into your browsers location field -
in this case: 'stream.qtv.apple.com/channels/foxmovies/rtsp/050400/titanAE_40.mov'
5. Press Return and viola your browser should start downloading....
wait until the movie has fully loaded - now you can save the FULL movie to your hd :-)

It's a SMIL file, SMIL stands for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. It's quite similar to HTML and is used for streaming presentations on the net. Real Networks products use it a lot, but it's a W3C standard and QT presentations can use it to, as is the case here. Rather than ramble on here, have a look at http://www.w3.org/AudioVideo/
In Windows land the file type is .smi which is confusing for us Mac heads who think means a Self Mounting Image. Saving the SMIL file to disk may give you the URL for the component pieces of video; you could then try pasted that URL directly into your browser.

Hope this helps,

Mike

It does not work:

With the Save As in the Menu I get the HTML code. I have no idea about how to get the .smi file.

In the Code (Option Souce Code in IE) the URL of the Movie is displayed.

By going to this URL directly I can download the movie indeed, however trying save-as does not work, as I receive the message: not enough space available on your HD.

Another method to download is in IE to check under options: download film. Then you get an HTML file with the movie embedded somehow (The file size shows that the movie must be contained somewhere inside). However I lack the knowledge of how to extract the actual movie. I can open the file with HexEdit, but I have no idea where the movie part starts and ends and which (HTML-)Part I can cut off in order to receive a pute QT-File.

I think, I must stress that I do not intend to use this knowledge to obtain material protected by copyright law. I respect copyrights. If sharing this knowledge itself infringes copyright laws or other laws please advise me.

Use the drop-down menu along the movie, not the menu. Oh, and QuickTime Pro is required to save to disk...
