Had this scanner for about a month now.
The things I like are:
Price
low profile
drivers are good (almost)
accurate scans for 600dpi Ink jets
one button scans
bundled software (photoshop LE), Photo studio, Omnipage
tried them all (the software) and they are pretty good for the money.
The feature I like best is the "Button Menu". Press the button on the front of the scanner and a menu appears with one click scan/fax/copy. The fax and copy go direct to printer or modem.
Came with a USB cable. They say not to use it in a hub but if it went into a powered hub I am sure it would work.

Don't like:
Photoshop acts like a beta version with artifacts in the menus

The Button menu has a conflict with Office 2001. At present I have to disable the extentions for one while running the other then switch/restart, back and forth, on and on. The ball is in Canons court at the moment to fix this problem.

The Help file is minimal, could use more detail on all the scan settings available without having to do trial and error testing.

In copy mode I have noticed some edge clipping if the page is not close enough to the glass. And at the end of the scan as well. This only occurs in copy mode and it may be my printers minimum margins. Unresolved as yet.

What do I expect, for 150 bucks it delivers quite a bit.

It's not recommended to work on the hub because of the fact it's totally USB powered. Just because the hub is there, it doesn't always draw enough from the port. So, alot of problems end up getting fixed by removing the hub and other devices hooked up to it and the scanner runs like a champ. And are you talking about the toolbox? I've never actually talked to anyone who has tried using the button in 2001. That's a first. =)

Not exactly the toolbox, but a part of it, an extension called the 122u Button manager.
With this ext. enabled in 2001 try formatting a text box and you will find the controls sluggish or non existent in the format window in 2001.

The easiest way to get an image into 2001 is to use the insert/picture/scanner command. The Button would add a lot of extra clicks.

The Button toolbox is most handy when a quick copy, fax or archive scan is desired. (One click and out comes the doc from the printer)

The Main? Tool box is for all the other scan settings, saving ect.

This I know, since I work supporting Canon products on Macs. Alot of it, since we haven't gotten a copy of 2001 to use with the scanners, is probably because it didn't exist when the scanner was developed. That and the button isn't really a supported feature for inside of programs. More designed to use as a quick scan feature through the plugin instead.

Nice to hear a voice from Canon.
I am not a software engineer and here are the facts (best I can tell).

The Button manager can not be accessed inside 2001. Only the plug-in can via TWAIN or the INSERT command.

The Button manager is not a plug-in and is used for a quick image to printer, desktop, fax, ect.

The Button Manager is an extension (and must be running at startup)

The Button Manager uses OS Resources that 2001 uses at the same time and the only visible conflict at the moment is the mentioned Text Box Formatting Problem.

Is this recap about right?
Can MS and or Canon correct this?
Chances or MS or Canon making correction?

By the way, I know what OCR, FILE stand for in the scan choices but what about LBP and BJ?
What file format does the copy command use? exp.-150FILE
