Haven't been able to find an answer to my problem anywhere else - Running a G4/733 w/Superdrive and I can't get my DVD-R's to initialize.

CD-Rs work great. No problem there. But when I put in the DVD-R, it wants to initialize the disc. I click "ok", it gives me the option for the ProDOS format. Uh, ok. "Disc failed to initialize because the disc is locked." Then it ejects it.

I am trying 4 different DVD-Rs from Apple and getting the same results on all four discs trying them on two different machines that were purchased at separate times.

What am I doing wrong?

This doesn't really help you, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me how long of a video you can put on one of apple's DVD-R's?

Thank you

I am assuming that you want to use DVD's for backup if you are trying to initialize them. You will have to insert the disc while an application that supports DVD burning is open i.e. Toast titanium for data or iDVD for video. The DVD media that apple uses is 4.7 GB which can handle 60 minutes of video with iDVD and a rediculous number of photos for slide shows which work beautifully. DVD Studio Pro allows you to use variable data rates and you can record anywhere from 60 minutes to basically as much video as you want, depending on the quality. I have recently ruined 3 DVD discs using DSP though, each time I get an error message a third of the way through, other than that I have had nothing but good luck. The only thing I noticed is that the colors are a little over saturated and the contrast is raised dramatically when DV streams are converted.

If you are using a dvd-r for making a movie, then within idvd you must first click "burn DVD" then it will prompt you to insert the media.
