Is it possible to make a DVD out of something you've recorded off a satellite TV signal onto a TIVO type of recorder?
Also, can you make a DVD from an analog VHS tape?

Easy as pie!... Just hookup the video & audio outs from your TIVO or VCR to your digital camera and record what you want. Then just import the DV tape into iMovie and edit and then export to iDVD. Works fine.

If you have a replaytv, you can extract the mpegs over tcp/ip without converting to analog then back to digital.

This was the question I was about to ask and found it answered here... I don't have the TiVO unit yet, but am looking forward to it. There aren't any problems/hangups with this at all?
Also, jtc... if you use a DV camera, there is no analog conversion, right?
I suppose the biggest problem with doing a whole movie would be that neither the miniDV tapes or the DVDs burned with iDVD will hold that much data, right?

Depending on your output - If your miniDV camera takes the input as analog, then there is some conversion going on somewhere. Has to be.
Case in point - when I hook my Canon Elura up to my Bell ExpressVu dish and record an episode of The Simpsons to miniDV tape, it uses RCA input/output. Then I capture it to my Ti through firewire. There had to be some analog action going on in the camera somewhere.
So it depends on how you get the source into the camera.

yes, there is an analog loop taking place in the workflow described above. the analog conversion actually begins in tivo when you output via convential (composite, svideo, even component) connections. Your dv camcorder is also accepting the input via analog connections.
interesting that you can take the mpg out of the replay via tcp/ip -- wonder how FCP will deal with the mpg stream? it's pretty picky about what it will import.
it'd be nice if the digital sat devices had a firewire out -- then you could just hook up to your mac.

iT is indeed , but why pay a fee?.

You don't pay a fee to record. You pay a fee for the service. Their guide data. The ability to record entire seasons of a show(first runs, no reruns). In the case of DirecTivo you are recording the direct mpeg stream w/dolby 5.1 surround. Wonderful picture quality. Oh, you can also pause and rewind live TV. See if you can get a demo at your local Circuit City. Truely wonderful machine.
edit: noticed that you are in Spain. Don't suppose they have CC's there. Oops.

It is possible to get the digital info directly out of a Tivo. It is NOT easy though - and you have to buy a network card for the Tivo for about $100. Tivo does not store the data in a usable format, but it can be extracted and converted. It is probably only worth it if you have a slow computer (probably anything less than a dual 800?) because encoding DV to MPEG2 takes a long time and requires a huge amount of disk space. The Tivo essentially does this for free. If you are not afraid of linux (which the tivo runs) then look for a program called "extractstream".

I have had great success taking the S-Video out from my DirecTV Tivo Receiver and recording on to DV (in this case using my Sony Digital8 camcorder) and then importing it into iMovie2 for editing. The quality is excellent.
For a good example you can go to http://homepage.mac.com/rcfuzz/iMovieTheater5.html and see the 3 minute music video I made as a tribute to the 9/11. The video was edited from the 2 hour CBS 9/11 special. The web video was reduced to 240x180 using Sorrenson3 codec. Check it out - it's worth the trip.
To get the finished product on to VHS I let iMovie2 export it back to the DV camera via firewire and then it's just a matter of dubbing from the camcorder to VHS. The end result looks very good.
