Consumer uses for QuickTime Streaming Server?

The recent QuickTime Live! event has me intrigued. I had no idea Apple offered this kind of stuff for free. So I've been wondering, what are the uses of (QTSS) QuickTime Streaming Server and QuickTime Broadcaster in the home?

I bet some cool stuff can be done. Broadcaster seems pretty self-evident. I came up for a great idea for it. I think the next birthday we have - in summer - I'll broadcast it live to family members that live overseas! Now that's just too cool.

But I don't quite understand how QTSS might be used by a consumer. Any suggestions?

BTW, would broadcaster need QTSS to work?

Mmm, no one seems to have any ideas. I would have liked this one answered too. I can think of a few I would want to use it for, but that would require a faster modem connection than I currently have, i.e. broadband. These would be video and mp3 streaming for friends and work. Mp3 streaming would be ok through my broadband but would be a pain if I was using the Mac at the same time. Maybe when I get a new Mac I can use my current B&W G3 for this. Video though would be still pretty slow I suspect, especially since it would be on a G3.

So what to use it QTSS for now? Maybe we're missing some obvious use? Free software is just so tempting.

BTW. I don't think you need Broadcast to transmit. Broadcast I think is when you want to take live feeds and encode it in real time for streaming. So for your birthday idea I reckon you will need Broadcast if you want to stream the event live. Otherwise you could just edit it in iMovie, output it as an MPEG4 file and stream that through QTSS.
Man, Macs rock. Loads of cool free stuff that allows you to do so many cool that no average PC drone can do.
Shame my broadband connection sucks.

I guess you could pull one of those web / house / work cam. I bet a ton of Mac people are going to get jobs hooking up web streams for local clubs etc. Considering we are going to have a high quality streaming application.

I've used coolstream from Evological (same idea) to stream in-house focus groups at the ad agency I work for. We tape the focus group, so I simultaneously hooked up the camera to a G4, and send out the stream over the LAN.

Problem was, i could never find a codec that looked really good with good framerates and high bandwidth- I've got 100b switches, might as well use them. Ended up getting ond of those video leapfrog analog transmitter/reciever pairs, and it worked better, since everyone was watching the focus group from a different conference room anyway.

If they all wanted to be at their desks, coolstream/QTSS was a pretty good solution. Maybe onces mpegla stops messin' around with mpeg4 lisences I'll look at that again.

Well, Broadcaster looks like a great way to set up a make-shift video phone, as long as both users (or more!) have Macs and broadband.
