I have a Sony DCR-TRV320 and a Macintosh G4 Dual 500mhz.
I'm wondering how to get the still images from the camera's "memory stick" into the G4?
The camera comes with a serial cable and Windows software.
The digital video action works flawlessly with firewire and iMovie.
But how do I get at my stills?

I have the same question. Surely there is software for the Mac that will allow us to download (from camera), edit, and print the memory stick images.

Since posting that, I've found that what we need is a "stick reader" which is hardware, and I'm not sure of the price. It's a little gizmachi that you stuff the memory stick into.
So the guy at Circuit City lied to me.
Imagine that!

There are two ways to do this:
1) Use Virtual PC and the serial reader that comes with the camera (you also need a USB to serial converter of course :-( ). This works but is incredibly slow.
2) Get the Sony USB memory stick reader. This comes with two extensions that drop into the system folder. Memory sticks in the reader appear as disks on the desktop and you can use them as such. This is necessary if you decide you need more than the 4MB card you get with the camera.

Hi
I don't know the camera at all, but I'm assuming it has firewire. If it does, you really don't need to buy anything. Take the tape out of your DV but leave in the memory stick. Set the camera to memory and callup the first picture using the LCD screen. Set iMovie to import and then step thru the pictures using the LCD screen. Once you've gone thru them all, stop importing and then edit your one long single clip up into lots of clips - each with its onwn still picture on.

Neat trick.
Unfortunately I have a PC-100 which can take images at 1152 x 864 and all you get out of iMovie is 640 x 480 :-(

Check this out:

Microtech has several readers to choose from. I have the CompactFlash & SmartMedia reader and it works like a charm.

You just need to buy a memory stick floppy disk adapter.
It costs about $80 dollars before tax.
You just put your memory stick into the memory stick floppy disk adapter, and then put that memory stick floppy disk adapter into the floppy disk drive. And then, run the software that supplied with the memory stick floppy disk adapter, and then you can download the picts on the memory stick to your computer's hard drive from the supplied software.
And if you also have a PC computer, you can also save any kind of format files into the memory stick with the memory stick floppy disk adapter.
I think you should have a booklet that tells you about the accessories that you can add to your sony digital 8 camcorder. That booklet comes with your digital 8 camcorder. On that booklet, you can find all sorts of things which you may find useful and want to buy them such as batteries, lights, tripods, camcorder bags, and iLink cables, USB-memory stick reader, memory stick floppy disk adapter, and much more.
Only if you bought your sony digital 8 camcorder second hand, then you may not have all of the original things that came with the sony digital 8 camcorder.
So, there's no need of buying other adapters, like Serial to USB, and etc.
And there's no need of buying a emulator of Windows9.X such as VirtualPC.
These things cost too much to do a very simple job.

Hi!!
I am a long time Mac user.
I bought my first Mac in 1994, and continue using it up to the present time.
Currently, I want to buy a new Mac to replace my 7 years old Mac computer(Apple Macintosh Performa 550). And I owns a Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820. So, I am wondering about "Can my Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820 work with iMovie 2.0.1??".
I have checked out Apple.com about its Final Cut Pro 1.2 software's compatibility with many brands of Digital Camcorders, such Canon, Sony, JVC, and so on.
It doesn't tell about the compatibility with Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820.
So, if iMovie does not work with Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820, then I will buy a Sony Windows PC instead. That's because my Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820 works fine on my cousin's Sony Windows PC with iLink.
I hope anybody out there can give me an answer about whether or not "Can my Sony Digital 8 Camcorder DCR-TRV820 work with iMovie 2.0.1?".
Thanks!! ^_^

I can't give you a definitive on the DCR-TRV820 but you can use iMovie on most all of the other Sony camcorders and the Firewire/iLink is the same in them all. This would imply that it would work.

While there are several ways to get stills downloaded to iMovie, as another poster said, the quality drops from 1152x768 to 640x480. While I can understand why iMovie wouldn't be designed to download higher-res stills, it seems hard to believe that a memory stick reader would be necessary. Maybe we just need a special piece of software. I wasn't able to find anything in the TRV20 manual about downloading stills over FireWire, and I can't find any other information on this either.

I have a Sony PC100E, and bought the USB adapter, which works well. If you have a PC you can use the serial version that came with the camera to exchange photos on the memory stick between the two computers.
Also if you can save pictures to the memory stick from the mac, and as long as they're 1152 x 864, you can view them on the camera, and even use them as backdrops with the C.CHROM digital effect.. if you want to.
If you're looking for a new mouse as well, I noticed that Sony sell a memory stick reading 2/3 button USB mouse with scroll wheel for not much more than the memory stick reader alone. And its not beige, unlike the USB reader.
