I've got some asf files on my PC that I'd like to play on my mac, but I'm afraid to install Windows Media Player on the Mac..

How is the program? Any major problems? Or should I trust my gut on this one?

Yeah, it's worth it. No major problems, just minor gripes (interface, the windows way of quitting when you close the window etc.).

In fact I used it to watch a few Simpsons episodes yesterday...

But scaling to full screen is horrible at best...

I installed it, but my ASF files are stuttering...

I've got a iMac DV 400, with 512 ram, any clue?

I've found this true of Real player, but not WiMP. Are you sure?
(btw, I agree that WiMP is crap and the format is crap, but that at least it doesn't interfere with other programs)

No, I'm pretty sure. I just tried it. And there's no preference to turn it off either. WiMP 7.0.1
