I got one for Xmas, and, yeah, it's worth it. The programmable buttons are actually what make it worth it for me.
I use the mouse with one hand and the Shuttle Pro with the other. You can also use it with other apps; I use it with IE--scrolling with the jog wheel.
I haven't used it with X, though; however, I know the drivers are available.

what have you programed into the buttons that you thought was particularly useful?

Pretty much anything that uses the command key combo (I use the command+T, "Split at playhead" quite a bit).
I just find using the Shuttle more convenient than keeping a hand on the keyboard, shuffling between the arrow and command keys. It did take some time to get used to (I had edited probably 150 hours of video before using it and had grown accustomed to the keyboard), but once I got in rhythm, it's tough not to use it.
Plus, it makes me feel like a pro.
