I can't seem to save some QT5 movies I see in IE to my computer. The "Save to disk" option is greyed out. I have the Pro 5 version of QT running under OS X 10.1.3. (I am attempting to download QT movie trailers from Apple and edit them to put into PowerPoint).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

FWIW, the QT controller to Save as QuickTime Movie will appear greyed out UNTIL the movie has completely downloaded to the browser. Once it has, it can be saved. You really shouldn't have any problems. I've saved dozens of trailers. However, note that some trailers are set up so they can't be saved.

Reply if you're still having problems.

I did wait for the whole movie to load. Is there some way to bypass this copy protection scheme? It is very annoying...

I've heard people claim they can bypass the copy protection. I've not had any luck. Are you sure that's the issue?

FYI, the Netscape cache is much easier to pull movies out of than IE. Make sure that the QT Prefs >QT Settings>Browser Plug-in>Save movies in disk cache is checked.

What trailer are you trying to pull down? Perhaps, I can take a stab.

View the source of the web page, fing the URL for the movie (search for '.mov'). Open a terminal session and navigate to the directory where you want the movie to be saved. Then type the following command:

curl -O <URL>

This will download the movie file to your local machine. Even if the file has been mastered to prevent saving, you will be able to play the file from your local hard disk.

Be warned however, some movies (most notably from starwars.com) I have seen lately can only be played from the web.

I tried the 'curl' thing but it did not work. It downloaded the reference movie only. I had the same problem when I made an HTML page in TextEdit with the movie as a link and chose "Download Link to Disk".

The movie I want is at: http://www.apple.com/trailers/columb.../qt_high2.html

I will try the cache thing with Netscape (which I have to download first) and I will post the results.

I don't get it? You should be able to save that trailer - I just did.

Do a "Save as QuickTime Movie" from the player. If you don't know how, open the QT Player and under the Help menu go the On-line QT Player Help.

You said you're using QT 5 Pro. Make sure it's been registered. Open your QT Player > go to Edit > go to Preferences > go to Regristration. In that window it should say QuickTime Key: 5.0 Pro Player Edition. If it doesn't, you need to register the key number that you got with the Pro version.

I feel stupid...

I just changed my login and forgot to reregister QT Pro for my new login. I feel so ignorant...

Thanks for the help though.
