This is how to obtain the cd burn capability of the new Power Mac G4 that
Apple has announced yesterday. If you have any of the following 3rd Party
drive this should work. This should work not only with internal drives but
external as well from what i have read on the web.
* Mitsumi CR-4804TE
* Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A
* Plextor CD-R PX-W124TS
* Plextor CD-R PX-W8220T
* Plextor CD-R PX-W8432T
* Sony CD-RW CRX140S
* Sony CD-RW CRX145E
* Sony CD-RW CRX160E
* TEAC 4x4x32
* Yamaha CRW4416S
* Yamaha CRW6416S
* Yamaha CRW8424S
* Yamaha CRW8824E
Necessary Files
---------------
* Disc Burn
- http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11901
* Radiologic CD Master Preview
- http://www.radialogic.com/products/cdmasterpreview.html
Necessary Apps
--------------
* A file/creator changer application
* Tome Viewer
INSTRUCTIONS -- PLEASE READ NOTES AT BOTTOM
-------------------------------------------
1) Mount the "Disc Burn" on your desktop and proceed to extract the files
onto your harddrive
2) Extract the following files from the tome located at and place as noted:
- Disc Burner->Installer Files->Disc Burner->Installation Files
HD->System:
* Finder
HD->Applications (Mac OS 9)->Utiliies;
* Disc Burner
HD->System Folder->Extensions:
* Apple CD/DVD Driver
* ATA
* Authoring Support
* CarbonLib
* Disc Burner Extension
HD->System Folder-> Extensions->Authoring Support Files:
* CD
* CD-R
* CDB
* MatshitaCDR
* SonyCDR
3) Using "CD Master Installer" install only the "CD Master Application"
from the custom install menu
4) Remove the "PlextorCDR" from the plugins folder in the "CD Master
Folder" that was installed in the ROOT directory of your hard drive
5) Take the "PlextorCDR" and change creatory/type strings with your
favorite application for this to:
Creator: burn
Type: plug
6) Now place your newly recognized "PlextorCDR" into the "Authoring Support
Files" folder
7) Restart and eveything should work as demonstrated by Jobs himself.
NOTES
-----
* remember to back up the Finder in case the new Finder doesn't work or
your machine won't boot
* the heirarchy that is noted in the instructions is necessary... 9.1
restructured the way applications folder is named and the utilities folder
is nested within this... iTunes will not be able to burn CD's because it
won't be able to find the "Disc Burner" application
* my machine is as follows:
- G4 Gigabit OS 9.1
- Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A installed in place of DVD-RAM
I am fortunate because this drive boots with a CD
Refer to xlr8yourmac's drive database to find if any
of the forementioned drives will boot from a CD
COMMENTS
--------
This drive apparently burns at 12x from the background. I have no idea if
"burn-proof" is working in the background but I am assuming that the new
software has its own buffering methodology in order to prevent this. This
email was written, as well as the folowing applications were open as i was
burning a iTunes Audio CD:
-IE
-Finder
-AOL Instant Messenger
-Mulberry
-Gerry's ICQ
-iTunes
Everything works as Jobs has demonstrated, at least from what i have tested
so far. I am not responsible for any damage that might occur from this
procedure. I hope Apple starts shipping these drives instead of their wimpy
8x drives. Good luck and have fun...
Best luck,
Eugene Kim

anyone have any luck getting this to work with firewire drives? i did all the hacks, tried it, no luck so i then added the cd master firewire cd driver to the system folder and still no luck. but cd master says it is compatible with the que firewire drives ( what i'm using )...

I'm also having trouble with a QPS Firewire drive.
I did the install just as directed and rebooted. I fired up Disk Bunner and it told me to insert a blank media, so I do. And the drive simply ejects the cd-r/cd-rw back out. I have no idea why this is happening... I can assume the disc burner software is detecting the drive, that's the only explanation for the odd behavior... but why it's not working right... I don't know.

bgerson, while the Radialogic home page doesn't link to CD Master anymore, the direct link to CD Master posted above works.
I didn't have any luck getting my Sony Spressa USB to work either, though I hear the Sony FireWire's work.

No luck here either. I've got a Yamaha CRW 8824E in a Firewire enclosure.
I've tried several ways, including:
- following the instructions given here
- with & without Toast CD and firewire support
- with & without the CDMaster extensions
and every combination.
Both Toast and CDMaster are able to see the CDRW with the appropriate extensions enabled, but iTunes is not finding it regardless of the combination.
Any other ideas?

I installed everything as detailed in the above message. When I try to "detect" a supported CD-R in iTunes, it cannot find any (I have a Yamaha 4416S). Just for the hell of it, I tried to burn an audio CD in iTunes, and it worked (I am listneing to it now...)
The problem is that I cannot use my CD-RW for anything other than creating audio CD's. If I insert a blank CD-R, nothing happns. If I insert a data CD, nothing happens.
What's the deal?

I am alittle confused myself. I use a Yamaha and am only capable of audio burning through iTunes, But there is definitely no Finder Burn access. Perhaps our genius who found this can help us find the answer? Hey, toast works great with it though, but alas...no standard CD access through this technique.

hello all this is eugene.
my machine seems to be working well and will work using toast, itunes, and the disc burn software... so i have no idea what other suggestions i can offer you.. the plextor drive seems to work well, the only other suggestion for the other people is to make note what plugin extension you are using...
not to sound dumb.. but to clear up the confusiong in my email above... use the plextor plugin for a plextor drive, yamaha with yamaha, etc...
for the qps drives.. most are plextor mechanisms... so those should work if you disable the rest of the qps extensions.. otherwise i have not other suggesionts.. i'll borrow my friends external drives and see what i can do.. but that's all i can really offer as the author of the email
sorry again but i'll keep trying

please take note.. i'll try the best i can.. but i do not have access to most of your drives to test... if not any of them.. i'll try going to fry's sometime soon and "borrow" the drives and see if i can get some of the bigger problems working but.. i'm headed back to school for a couple of weeks to pack up my room and put into storage...
i start my coop with apple in a couple of weeks so i'll try more then when i get settled.. otherwise.. i'll do my best to help you all...

Hi,
I just want to let you know that i patched the sony plugin so that it works with my Teac IDE Recorder CD-W54E. i replaced my CD-Rom in the beige G3 with the Teac Recorder.
I made the plugin available at my website http://www.region-online.de/home/dsimon/
It only works with that specific Teac Recorder so far. It works flawlessly so far. Apple Disc Burner is really cool, burned a CDRW in the background while reading Usenet News :-). Erasing CDRWs works via "Erase Disk" in the Special Menu...
Ciao, Dominique
PS: I might get it to work with other internal IDE Teac Recorders, send me the ID String of your Recorder shown in Apple System Profiler ("Product-ID:") to my eMail Address d.simon@gmx.net

I followed al l the instructions as listed and the process does not work on the Plextor IDE 12x10x32x I installed in place of my DVD drive in a G4/400 (AGP). The drive otherwise performs flawlessly with all types of burning software.
Any suggestions?

What's your setup? What Mac? How's the Yamaha connected (Internal/External, SCSI/USB/FireWire)? Does the drive appear in iTunes' Preferences Advanced tab?

I have a Yamaha CRW4416SX connected to an Adaptec 2906 in a B&W G3. Neither iTunes nor Disc Burner recognize the drive. I wonder if it's the fact that it's a G3 or a SCSI card that's interferring?

I have a B&W G3-450. The CRW4416S is an external SCSI device (Apple BTO, Adaptec 2930CU as secondary controller). The drive will appear in iTunes Advanced Preferences tab only if I enable either the CD Master or Toast extension, but is useable in iTunes without either enabled.
As I stated, I was able to create an audio CD without having the CD Master or Toast extensions enabled, even when the Advanced Properties showed no supported drives available. However, with this configuration, I was unable to get the system to recognize any CD's inserted into the burner - blank or data.
Currently, I have the Toast extension enabld, and I can mount disks and use iTunes, but cannot use finder and Disk Burner to init/write CD-R's. I am assuming Toast works as well (I have lanched it, but have not tried to use it with the Disk Burner extension and Toast extension enabled concurrently.

That's basically the same configuration I have but when I click the "Burn CD" button, the iris opens but the message is "Burner or software not found..." This is very strange. I've got one more thing to try.
Thanks.

I am using a Yamaha CRW8424S. After fooling around with no success, I decided to disable all toast reader extensions and this seemed to work for me. After getting several messages saying the burner is not found, itunes now sees me using my Yamaha. I am burning an itunes CD as I write this. I have not been able to mount a blank CD on my desktop yet. Any suggestions?

I at least got iTunes to recognize my CD-RW after carefully deleting everything and reinstalling it per instructions. However, Disc Burner won't recognize a blank CD inserted (except in iTunes). If the Toast Extension is loaded, Disc Burner won't even launch (can't find a library).

I got iTunes to burn a CD on my Yamaha 8x8x24S External SCSI CD-RW. I just hacked the CDMaster Yamaha Plugin. This was using Mac OS 9.0.4 (I am waiting to get the 9.1 CD to upgrade). I'll try the Apple Disc Burner hack when I install 9.1.

Well, I still haven't been able to burn a CD from iTunes, but I have found that it does recognize my Yamaha CRW 8824E (Firewire enclosure) - as I was able to Import one of my CDs into MP3 format quite easily (all the while working in Word, Netscape, Eudora, etc., etc.).
So, now, if I could only get it to work in the other direction...

Hello, I can't get the Finder to extract from the Tome. Keep getting an error with TomeViewer 1.3d3: "Problem extracting file Finder. Oops. -43" I've tried it on 3 different machines, and I'm sure the Tome file isn't corrupt. For anyone who has successfully extracted Finder 9.1.1, would you be willing to email it to me as an attachment or get it to me in some way (I have an AppleShare IP server I could let you drop it on as well).

I noticed that the new Apple CD/DVD driver has cured my Plextor internal drive of the annoying auto-open 'feature' so I don't have to use a 3rd-party driver or hack anymore! Also, as I write this, I am burning an audio CD in the back using iTunes! I am also able to, from the finder, prepare and mount a blank CD-RW/CD-R for burning. However, when I have loaded up the disk and ask the finder to burn it, after a progress bar pops up, I am told that 'The burn could not be completed because the device is not supported.' This also occurs if I choose 'Erase Disk' under the 'Special' menu. Toast can access the burner, though, using only the Apple extensions and drivers.

I had a thought about the issues here. If burning works from iTools but not from the Finder, could it be that the problem is not with the drivers in the 'Authoring Support Files' folder but with the new 'Apple CD/DVD Driver'? If that is the case, is it possible to hack 'Apple CD/DVD Driver' to support more drives?

Also, for those people who can't get it to work, you can drag a playlist from iTunes or just a few mp3 from the iTunes window into Toast. One extra step but I was happy when I found it out.

I don't think has been asked, but are any USB drives supported yet? I've seen people say that both the Sony Spressa and Que drives don't work. I have a Sony Spressa, and a 333 iMac, will this work for me?

Just from reading through everything here it would appear that Que drives don't work w/ this hack. Which sucks since that is what I have but I"m still going to try it. I've got til Tues before college starts again so I'll fool around. If I can get it to work I'll post back here and tell everyone how to do it.

I had the problem also of unable to extract Finder with TomeViewer. I eventually solved it by adding a few extra characters to the "Finder" name (e.g. "FinderXXX") in the "Save As" dialog of TomeViewer. Then after it extracted I simply used a utility like FileBuddy to change the name back to simply "Finder". The filename is locked so you will have to use a utility to unlock it or simply change the name. Either way it is a simple process.

as for the finder not expanding, i had the same problem, but then it occurred to me that of course youre not going to be able to replace it while finder is open, so all i did was mount the disc burner image, open the tome viewer, and force quit finder. much easier. finder will reopen when you quit the tome viewer

I have a yamaha CRW4260 and I've tried everything listed here and a lil plug hacking of my own. After seeing what dsimon did with the sony plug, I tried messing around with the yamaha plug to see if I could add my drive's prod id to the plug. When i try to use disc burner(itunes has worked fine), it asks for a blank cd and sits there after i give it one. Any ideas?

I think you need a patched Apple CD Driver that it works for you in the finder also. Your Recorder must be supported through Apples CD/DVD Driver to get it to work, i think. Try it out and patch the Apple Driver to accept SCSI Devices.

Anyone get a SCSI drive to work w/ Disc Burner yet? Or will someone post the hacked Apple CD/DVD driver when it is set to accept SCSI? iTunes works fine, but not Disc Burner. It won't recognize blank media.
Thnaks.
