I was listening to an MP3 with iTunes a few minutes ago while at the same time downloading a track from eMusic. As soon as the track finished downloading, iTunes came to the front and started playing the track.

I don't want it to do that. It's annoying behaviour, and I can't imagine anyone wanting this function. iTunes is based on SoundJam MP, which NEVER did this to me, so this must be an Apple-added "Feature™".

I've scoured iTunes's preferences, but I can't see where to disable this "Feature™", so perhaps it's IE's fault? But then why didn't it ever do this before?

Agh.

iTunes really IS an excellent player, but this it too much...if I can't figure out how to turn this off, I'm going to resume using Audion as my primary MP3 player.

Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, have you figured out how to stop it? Thanks for any help!

Note: I quit iTunes and downloaded another track. This time it launched iTunes! This is really a major problem, and I'm not at all happy with this.

I suspect that the Explorer preferences are the problem. Try looking through the helper application list or whatever it's called. It's probably currently set to "Open file with... iTunes" for MP3s. Just a hunch.

Open your Configuration Manager (in Control Panels) and change these settings to whatever you want them to be.
Or open Audion and tell it to handle it all and it'll do it itself...

I just selected the iTunes helper settings in Config Manager and deleted them.

I figured it out this morning, just haven't had a chance to post yet. It was so simple, I almost feel stupid for posting.

It turns out that IE gets set to launch the application associated with MP3s. So if iTunes is open, IE tells it to start playing the just-downloaded MP3. If iTunes isn't open, IE tells the Finder to launch iTunes and start playing the MP3.

I had to go in to IE's prefs and edit the association so that IE would save the file rather than launch iTunes.

Simple fix.

I'm still wondering why no other MP3 player has done this before, but I won't let it trouble me too much.

Thanks to namannik and Cipher13 for their help and suggestions!
