Two things I love are U2 and Apple. I've been trying to figure out this question for some time. Here I go.
I own the U2 DVD "Rattle and Hum" which contains about 7 more songs than are found on the CD release. I'm a huge U2 fan, so I wanted those other songs on a CD. When napster still worked, I found a few of them, but not all of them. And I don't know much about downloading mp3s from other websites... but every time I tell my PC friends to check (frankly it seems they have more options when it comes to finding mp3's) they don't find what i'm looking for (u2 reference).
OK, I've figured out how to use my mini-dv camcorder to copy the DVD to mini-dv tape. I own Final Cut Pro 2.0, iMovie, I tunes.
How can I tape certain songs from my mini-dv and make them .mp3? It would be nice if there was some shareware program or something way to make the song fade up and fade out... or a way to edit it. I figured FCP 2.0 should be able to do it, but maybe there is an easier way.
And this is for my own personally use. I'm not trying to sell it. I was just want to be able to hear the best version of "with or without you" which i believe is on the DVD.
Thanks to you U2 and apple fans out there.
matt

Iva already done the exact same thing. You need a program called DVD Extractor 0.9 (for OS 9) and mAC3dec 1.4 (works in 9 and X). Use DVD Extractor to rip all the different tracks from the DVD, then mAC3dec to decode the AC3 soundtrack into AIFF, PCM or MP3. Use FinalCut to fade in and out if you want. I have 5 versions of Rattle and Hum; CD, DVD, VHS, Audio Cassette and Vinyl and have to admit to being a bit over the top. The version of With Or Without You is brilliant, with just a couple of extra passionate lines thrown in towards the end that make it just that extra bit special. I actually ripped the video track of that clip and converted it to mpeg1 (using Cleaner 5 to maintain the widescreen aspect which is amazing on my 22" Cinema Display ) so I can instantly play it any time I want without having to unpack the physical disc each time. Its a brilliant song to have even if youre not a fan. Email me if you have any more questions : playdifferent@mac.com

Thanks for breaking the silence on this one. I've wanted to do the exact same thing for a while but been intimidated by the whole DVD extraction thing. I know how to run FCP really well, so I could help with the whole fade in/out thing... In the meantime I'll try the extraction one more time.

dvdextractor should have asked you in what directory you wanted to save your files (file->save or something, right?). On most dvd's you'll get ac3 files for audio, which you'll need to decode with macAC3Decoder, which is currently a homeless app that I've put on my idisk at http://homepage.mac.com/lucylawless/mAC3dec1.4.sit
I don't know what formate music dvd's are in, though

okay I did convert the entire DVD to an mp3 by dragging track 1 to the desktop... but there is also track 2... shoudl i click the merge button?
Also, how do you get certain songs out of the whole thing? Any ideas?
How did you do it if you did it?

ok, see up in the left corner where the pop-up menu says tracks? try chapers, or cells until you get the sizes you want. If you choose 'merge selected' and select more than one item, they will be merged into one long file for each track (tracks being video, english audio, french audio, subtitles, etc.)
I never thought of dragging items to the desktop; I always selected the items I wanted and did File->Save...
