It would be nice if Pioneer announced a FireWire SuperDrive for those with existing G4's or even iMacs where the encoding would take much, much longer.

Even so, iDVD is only bundled with SuperDrives from Apple, and only work with those internal drive. DSP would probably write to it, but its 2.0general dvd-r materal, you'd want Pioneer's upcoming authoring drive for any serious authoring ($1400 I heard).

Now if Apple sells iDVD.... hmmm.... like a d/l.....

Why should iDVD only work with internal SuperDrive. Does it only recognize ATAPI bus. Does Pioneer sell internal (IDE/ATAPI) model? That should be the same thing Apple buys OEM.

As for iDVD working in other systems, it need Velocity Engine (AltiVec) and will NEVER work with iMacs (until they're G4 - MacWorld Tokyo?). New G4s (667 and 733) have 4 Altivec units, compared to 2 in old G4s, so iDVD should really scream in these.

I have a LaCie FireWire-CDRW-Writer here, 16x/10x, and my question is: can I buy an IDE Superdrive, and open my FireWire burner, take out the CDRW drive and put the Superdrive in?

Is this possible?

Check out OWC - Other World Computing. They are selling the original SuperDrives ripped out of new G4's, and claim it works on any G4 with AGP? I have not tried it, bu it is cheaper than the $990, they are asking $599.

iDVD2 only works on a G4 with an _internal_ DVD-R.

So if you buy one... you need to install it internally for it to work with iDVD2.
