I am wanting to get screen captures of my DVDs. Does anyone know of programs that will allow me to do this. All I have right now is the Apple DVD player that my G4 came with and I didn't see an option to screen capture with it. My friend has a PC and his DVD player came with a capture option but his screen capture pics are only 72 dpi resolution. I am wanting some higher res captures. No less than 300 dpi resolution. Are there any mac programs (perferably free programs) that will do this? Thanks for any help.

First of all the short story: You can't.

(This is due to the DVD-video being rerouted directly to your screen from the video-card (and bypasses the OS, rendering the standard command-shift-3 or 4 with a grayish-green block for keying in the video). Not restrictions from MPAA or whatever...)
Your friend's DVD-player is probably a strictly software-player.

Second: Even if you could get a screengrab of your 72 dpi screen in 300 dpi, all you would be left with is a miniscule image. (Or a scaled version). The resolution of any digital video is about 720x576 (for DV anyway), so anything higher would not leave you with higher res image.

OK. So that wasn't really helpful.

Third: To do a screengrab, you would first have to rip the DVD to a file on your HD, then convert it to QuickTime (search for DVD ripper or MPEG 2 converter on Versiontracker). Then you can just go to the desired frame and drag it from the QuickTime player to the desktop.

Then scale it up to 300 dpi in Photoshop. As mentioned before, this WON'T give you a higher res--image.
