Hi I have a few files that are in ASF (windows media) formet, and want to convert them to either MPEG, or DV Stream so I can work with then in either iMovie, or Final Cut Pro. Do any of you know of software that will do this ? Thanks!

yes, there are a few, but they are all for windows. They also lower the quality (many are just screencapture utilities). if you have a pc or vpc, then look for asf2mpeg or something on searchengines or hotline etc.

Not anymore!
Try ffmpeg. there's a version ported for MacOSX here:

ftp://ftp.oaai.com/pub/ports/ffmpeg.tgz

after unzipping and untarring, it, you can get the formats it decodes/encodes by typing:

./ffmpeg -formats

to convert an asf file to MPG1, I think you type:

./ffmpeg -i /path/to/file.asf /path/to/newfileName.mpg

Obviously, this is a CLI tool.

Have you actually converted an ASF file, or are you just taking ffmpeg's word for it? Because I haven't been able to get it to accept an ASF (or RM for that matter) file as an input file. Has anyone else been able to do this?

I get "Unknown file format" when I try it. Is there a site that has the documentation for this thing?
