So.... if I have a limited budget, and I can get FCP Academic as a student for $299.00 or pay full price for Premier... are there any other compelling reasons why I should choose one over the other? I searched some of the archives... not much help...maybe missed something. My research indicates that I should go FCP. Thought I'd float a post.....I'm more of a prosumer I think..

I haven't seen any academic priced adobe software...wonder why that is?

regards...

i say go with FCP, especially if you can get the educational price. i mean, that's a $1000 package for $300. while premier is good (although i haven't tried the latest version), the controls/layout in FCP just seem more intuitive to me.

the university bookstore here usually has academic pricing for adobe stuff, at least for photoshop and other graphics apps. haven't been there in a while, though.

Premier is good - FCP is better.

From most standpoints; its so much faster to do most things in FCP than in Premier, and at that, FCP seems to do it better.

I really wouldn't hesitate at all to buy FCP over Premier, even if they were the same price.

I bought FCP at 1.25, and upgraded to 2.0. Haven't gone 3 yet.

I'd, without hesitation, give it the best software of the year award. It's just amazing.

I'll reiterate what everyone else has said, FCP all the way. I used Premiere 6 about a year ago and it was dog slow. Plus with FCP 3's real time rendering and color correction abilities, it's unbeatable for a consumer level video editing program. Have fun.

Final Cut Pro is the way to go. I'm a filmmaker, have been in love with digital video since 1995, and Final Cut Pro is the way to go.

As far as digital video goes there are two major players used in the film industry (AVID is the one used for most hollywood fare and Final Cut Pro is now the standard choice of independent filmmakers, and is also starting to get into major movies)

Check out www.theeditcenter.com You will see what I mean about final cut pro.

Stephen Sodenberg shot his lastest movie "Full frontal " with a Canon Xl-s and is editing it on Final Cut Pro at www.outpostdigital.com I know that because I read it and I went for a job interview there and saw him doing it

So there you go. No contest... Not to mention at my bookstore they have Adobe and Apple for about the same price... i think premiere was 250 to apple's 300.....

But there is no contest...

Final Cut Pro is the best. I just works better and it even looks better and it will be around in the next ten years.... I can't say the same about premiere....

I hear a rumor that Adboe might buy Avid just to stop apple from doing it... but i don't know...

your bookstore has a discount for premier? mine doesn't.... but that does not matter.... I'm going FCP cause your right about more people using it for independent film making....

woosh.... the sound of $299 leaving the wallet... ( more like swoosh...the swipe of a credit card )

http://www.adobe.com/education/purch...n_pricing.html

it's cheaper then FCP for education by $50 (but it's not worth it)

adobe has great programs, but when it comes to DV you cna't beat Final Cut Pro.

Not to sound repetitive,

FCP is the way to go, there' no doubt about that. I f FCP cost even twice of what you had to pay for Premiere, I would still go for FCP.

As an amateur who outgrew iMovie and went onto FCP I can't say enough how great FCP is. It is hard to believe that something so powerful can be at the same time easy and intuitive to use. Even at full price FCP is a better buy than Premiere. And as far as speed goes FCP on a G4 Mac is much better performing than Premiere is (who is going to take advantage of the velocity engine better than Apple. The nice thing too is that with FCP 3.0 you have the choice of OSX or OS9, I don't think there is a version of Premiere for OSX yet, is there?

The only reason to go Adobe as far as DV goes is if you simply must use PC hardware, otherwise on a Mac why settle for second best at such a small price differential?

i used Premiere back when it was the only game in town (and back when it was stuck on version 4.2.1 for a long long while). it served its purpose, but i have to agree with what everyeone else has already said.

FCP with an education discount is definitely the way to go.

Here's the important part about the education pricing, for some, they could care less, for me, it's a big important one.

Licensing. With the educational price, there is a cost of legal presentation. You can use it only for educational use, you may not sell what you make with it, so on and so fourth. There is no difference between the versions you're given, but the license is different. That's important to me, especially if I plan to use it AFTER I'm out of school.

Oh crap. I graduated. I'm burning my copy of Final Cut Pro right now.....

but seriously at least I actually paid for it..... how many people out there did that? yes, I'm talking to you....

I'm sure you are correct.... they hve many laws like that, that no one has ever heard of and more importantly impossible to enforce...

I hope one day our biggest problems in the world are kids trying to sell their films they cut on Final Cut Pro after college....
