I am having trouble downloading QT4 from Apple's servers. After going through submitting the form with my email address, my browser attempts to connect to ftp.info.apple.com/... it tries for a while, then says, "the Host Name Lookup Failed." I am using IE 4.01 w/Mac OS 8.5.1. I am on a network with a firewall. Any thoughts?

The firewall is probably repsonsible. Apple's intaller doesn't make allowances for user name and password, so it will hang at the proxy.

I am behind a firewall as well, and the only solution was to make starwars.apple.com domain accessible without a proxy.

I've had DNS lookup failures as well, but am not behind a firewall. This is currently the only domain I've tried that I have this problem with, and I've tried a few.

I had the same download problem and investigated using dnsquery under Power MachTen 4.1.1. ftp.info.apple.com is CNAMEd to ftptx.info.apple.com, and the lookup of ftptx failed.

I am using the Vicomsoft Internet Gateway v5, which also has implicated in streaming not working, but is not the problem here.

Because MediaOne gives me a dynamic IP address, though they make it look static outside, I run my own DNS server using Power MachTen. This resolver seems to be the problem. When I changed the name server (using the TCP/IP control panel) from my server to another resolver (also a BSD 4.4 clone but a different one) elsewhere on the net, dnsquery showed that ftptx had a very large number of A RRs, which perhaps you are supposed to choose randomly from or maybe it varies the order. And with the new DNS server, I was able to complete the download. Apparently the server I was initially using was unable to digest the huge number of A records.

So there is hope for the doanload! Change your name server address and try again. Obviously, you may need to hunt around a bit to find one that works.
