This seems like a bug. When we tried to download/play http://ds12.mp3.com/mp3s/lovesock/closely.mp3 from within Netscape. There's no sound. However, when we copy the URL and "Open URL" from Quicktime player, we could play the MP3 while it's downloading.

More MP3 for anyone to try is at http://www.mp3.com/artists/15/lovesock.html

Use the "Save" to download the file. "Play" or "Instant Play" did not work. However, we think there must be a way to get this to work somehow (at least for the "Play").

This may seem obvious, you do have QuickTime 4 in your plugins folder, right?

As for the "open url" feature, I believe this is mainly intended to connect to shoutcast servers (like those listed on MP3Spy).

The "Save" will call QT4 plug-in and start playing the Mp3 file. But there is no sound. Bug?

QT 4.0 does not support live streams of MP3s yet (i.e. listening to shoutcast servers). If you try to enter the URL of a shoutcast server, the player will only give you an error that it's "not a valid Movie" file.

Yes, it does not work with shoutcast. We just wonder why the plug-in kick in playing the MP3 but there's no sound? The "Save" is simply link to "....file.mp3" ("Instant Play" will look for Shoutcast server).

Try open this in Netscape http://ds12.mp3.com/mp3s/lovesock/closely.mp3

I got

http://ds12.mp3.com/mp3s/lovesock/closely.mp3

to play perfectly in netscape, and in the open url feature, over a modem.

Ok guys... now I was using IE 4.5... so things may be a bit different.

I configured IE to use the QT4 plugin when using my mp3s. You can do this through the helper application window in the prefs. There is one downfall to this though. If you are capturing a mp3 via the quictime player you can not save it as a .mp3 file that MacAmp can read. Even if you drop the file on the sound app mpeg autotyper, MacAmp will still not read it for some reason. Sound app lists and plays it as a mpeg 1 layer 3 though. Odd, huh?

PS...IE 4x has always worked just a little bet better with the quicktime plugin then netscape.

The sound played in the browser window using NS 4.51 (Mac). 56k modem connection and qt4.0 set for single stream. I got the QT authoring version of 4.0, if that makes a difference.

Ok... kiddies here is how you fix this problem.

Both IE and Netscape have "helper applications" in the prefs window. Make sure that you configure the browsers to handle ".mp3" (mpeg 1 layer3) files with the quicktime 4 plugin.

You will then be able to view mp3's via fast start in the browser window. You can also save the file as a functional MP3 with the plug in...unlike quicktime player. This way MacAmp can read it.

And as far as streaming mp3's go... I am pretty sure they have to be streamed from a quicktime streaming server if you want to listen to them with quicktime player. They may not sound as well with a slow bandwith though.

MacAmp's hotline site (hotline.macamp.com) has a app that will let mac amp listen to streamed mp3s that are not on a quicktime server.

I made a small Appl eScript that would open a .m3u file and redirect it to the QuickTime Player. When you hit the play links under www.mp3.com, it downloads a .m3u file that contains a single line (the url of the mp3). If you make this AppleScript the helper app for .m3u files or erm mimetype "x-audio/mpegurl" under Netscape, the QuickTime Player would then be called to open the mp3. I have a problem of not being able to play it without hitting the spacebar or play button.

Where are the shoutcast specs?

Hey Guys! I don't know what you guys talking about QT4 MP3 problem.
QT4.0 Player works great with MP3 files on my vintage 7100/80. It sounds great except when I touch the bass and treble. They just don't work well(makes stomping noise).
I use Netscape 4.51 and 1mb of cache. If anything makes it work fine, it may be the cache.
Anyway I'm enjoying QT4.

I could get 'closely' to sound good with Netscape direct from the url. Saving to disk required another download, and the saved file would skip under QT4 though sound good with MacAmp.

The pull down drawers are jerky, the volume control has too few gradations and the wheel is a bit silly, and there is a 2~4 pixel black vertical strip on the left of the movie screen that ends 1~ 2 pixels from the bottom.

Incidentally, I will not be renewing my TIME subscription and will continue to boycott the CNN website until the latter streams in QT :-)
