So here's a little project I've been working on: a series of digital photos, 640x480, shot in a sequence by just holding the shutter down.

Take pictures into Iview Media Pro, export a movie showing each still for 3 seconds, and crossfades between them, fade from and to black. Render out at 8fps, native 640x480 size for a 28 second final movie. Check out the filesizes and codecs:

None: 196 Megs
Sorensen 3: 59 Megs
Graphics: 44 Megs
H263: 12 Megs (but it looks NASTY)
Toast VCD Export: 4.6 megs (reduces filesize to VCD resolution)
3ivx: 1.7 megs

Not only is it the smallest file, it's also looks as good as no compression!

Problem is, if I put this 3ivx movie online and send someone a URL, will their Quicktime update be able to fetch that codec, or do they need to run over to 3ivx.com and manually install (since that's what I had to do to get it)?

If manual, who at Apple do we have to wake up to get this as a default codec? This thing is very impressive! Does it have a weakness that I can't see in this test?

Yup 3ivx is cool (^v^)

If you send it to someone you will have to send them to 3ivx.com to get it.

Apple won't (if ever) have it as a component download untill Version 1 comes out, its at Development Version 3.5 right now, basicly beta.

Expect 3ivx to get better also (^v^).

But don't steal movies please (^v^). (I know you don't anyways).

Send me the files, and I'll create something even smaller (seriously)!

As for QuickTime components, they need to be submitted to Apple in order for them to be included in the component download program.

Hello, Neighbor! Yes, it was quite a light show, particularly on Friday PM....

I hope this codec has the funding to grow- it's so nice. The encode times are even reasonable.

King: I too could make the movie smaller, but not at 640x480 and same fps and no visible compression artifacts... if youv'e got a trick, I'm all ears (or eyes, as it would be). I'll give you my originals to work with, but only on the condition you tell me how ya do it.

That is acceptable. Send me your originals and 3ivx movie (so I can see what you're comparing to). I'll post the results and the method I used to create it here.

I'm really excited for 3ivx... they've come a long way now and I could hardly wait to see what they come up with as thier final release. These days I'm finding it hard to even believe the legitamacy of DivX 4, and the logic behind what they're doing... but that's a whole topic to itself. I'd really love to see a viable competitor.. and it's something I wouldn't mind paying a little bit of money for (we all could afford Mac's... so we must have a little bit more spare $$$ than the Wintel guys ;-) )

You should try on2vp3 also, it's excellent, rivals 3ivx.
