<strong>I am new to using iMovie and iDVD. I am trying to create a DVD of a home movie that was created on a DV cam corder. I imported the DV into iMovie and did my edits. It is 46mins long. When I saved it out for iDVD the file size is 9.6GB. Since the DVD-R format is only 4.7GB is iDVD going to compress it or do I need to save it to a different format to get it onto one disk?

You only need to worry about the length of the movie file being under 1 hour for iDVD and 90 minutes max for iDVD2. Just drop the finished QT file into iDVD and it will take care of the rest for you. DV is the raw digital format that a DV camcorder uses and contains a huge amount of data, the DVD format uses MPEG2 which is a compressed format and the result will be much smaller.
If iMovie gives you the option of exporting the QT as a non-self contained version (I haven't used it in a while so I don't remember offhand) - do so because it will mot create a stand-alone movie that will waste a lot of time creating it and also waste alot of space as well. Remember you will need over 5 GB of free harddrive space for iDVD to create a disc image of the finished DVD before burning or you will run into trouble.
