QT 4 Controller for SWF files

I find it annoying that the Quicktime plugin adds the controller to the bottom of Shockwave Flash animations. This causes the files not to register properly in the browser and as a web designer, this is troublesome. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Did you try setting controller=false in the embed tag? Just checking. I bet it's some variation on that, if it's not a bug...

On the other hand, I find it troubling that Quicktime takes over handling of swf files, since it's takeover of .wav and .au files is a real pain in the butt, if you're trying to use javascript to control sounds.

Unless Apple has enabled LiveConnect in the 4.0 plugin, which I bet they haven't, I really wish that QT would drop off if the user already had a plugin that handled a media type.

It will be much more troubling if now SWF files are not able to send commands to the browser, after all.

Actually, you have to set the plugin to accept ".swf" files, then change your preferences in Netscape. It doesn't automatically take over that file extention.

Official word from Apple on how to remedy this problem if you are designing web pages:

"There are two ways to handle this:

1. If you know your viewers will have QuickTime 4 installed, embed the .swf
file in a movie. Just drag and drop the file on QuickTime Player and save as
self-contained. This will make a .mov file which consists of your flash
track. The default controller for these movies is "none", for the very
reason you point out.

2. If you still want to embed them as .swf files, go ahead and add the
controller="false" parameter. The Shockwave Plugin will ignore it, and the
QuickTime plugin will pay attention.
