QT4 & AVI Files - No Video Track

Here's one that I'm not sure what's going on. In using QT4 and a Win AVI file, I get the following msg when opening the file.
" You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename" because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the file or continue?
<close> <continue>
I thought QT4 had all the required compressors installed to play an AVI file. Has anybody else seen this before and what can be done to get QT4 to recognize the AVI file?

This depends on how you captured the AVI. Where did you get it from? If it comes from some capturing software, they might use some propriatary codecs that QT4 doesn't know about.

I know exactly what this is. This is almost certainly an Intel Indeo 5 compressed AVI - and Intel have not yet released a Macintosh compatible codec. To check, do the following:
1) Click on "Continue" presented at the "...compressor not found" error box.
2) Press Command-I (or "Movie" menu, "Get Info" menu item). An information window about the AVI will appear.
3) Select "Video track" in the left item select.
4) Select "Format" in the right item select.
5) The format should be listed as "IV50".
If this is the case then you will not be able to play it until Intel releases a Macintosh version of the codec. I would recommend writing a short message on the Intel Indeo forum in the "Indeo 5 compression codec for macintosh" thread to register your support for a release! It can be found at:
http://newsgroups.intel.com/ngi.exe?start=1&sort=sent&desc=y es&thread=yes&group=oi02
I am sorry this could not have been a more positive answer.

I have also had the same problem, however, the files that do not work with QT4 did work with QT3. The format listed is "IV32" which is compatible with Indeo 4. My guess is that QT4 isn't recognising Indeo 4. I tried placing it in the "QuickTime Extensions" but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Actually, that is not correct. IV32 is NOT compatible with Indeo Video4. You need both codecs installed on the computer to view both of the pictures. So, don't whine to Apple, yell at intel for not making their codecs backwards compatible.

Ok, I follow that much, but if it's not compatible with Indeo 4, why did it work with QT3?

I have a Windows 95 comp and recently d/l the new Quicktime 4. Whenever I tried to play an AVI file I get this message saying CANNOT PLAY BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A MOV FILE. I thought that the new Quicktime 4 was supposed to play AVI files. Can someone please help? Thanks.

Gromit,
The reason it worked in QT3 is that is that you had the right extension installed but which has somehow been disabled/removed - which it should not have been!
To play IV32 AVI files you need "Indeo® Video", and "Indeo® Video 4" for IV44 files (I am not sure if this is the correct code). Both are available from the Apple site (but are ultimately the responsibility of Intel!) at:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/indeo/
Get the codecs you require and drop them loose into your "Extensions" folder. They will work with whichever QT you have, QT3 or 4.

Jiat,
I usually get that message when a movie file is incomplete. Try downloading the file again and see if that solves your problem. If not, it may be that the file is not complete at the other end, so ask the site administrator to check its integrity!

Intel have released the Indeo 5.0 codec! Apple has it on their FTP servers which can be reached via:

Hey I have all three (3, 4, 5) Indeo codec's installed, I also have OpenDivX installed, yet Quicktime still can't play files with for format as "DIV3" or "MP42" (they have .avi extensions).
Does anyone know what I have to do to get this to work?
Mac OS 9.2.1

Isn't it funny that every week someone asks the same question? Have a search, there are lots of threads (and solutions!) out!
