I know that Apple says that the DVD media they sell is on a 45 day backorder, so what are the other options?

The title of this product says for data storage, is there any reason why this would not work for DVD-Video? http://store.yahoo.com/meritline/ritdvdvdrec.html

anyone with a superdrive, have you used something other than Apple's Media? And, does Apple's media have a name on it? Does it say Apple, someone else?

I am not sure if these are compatible. I have an older G4 with the DVD-RAM drive and I was told that the 5pack of DVD-R's that Apple is selling are not compatible with my DVD-RAM drive. No one I have talked to seems to be able to tell me what the difference is and how to find DVD-RAM discs. *sigh*

Best of luck.

DVD-R and DVD-RAM and not the same thing. DVD-RAM only works in other DVD-RAM drives, and thus is very limited. DVD-R is the new industry standard for consumer writeable media that can be played in and DVD drive.

I was able to find some DVD-R media for sale at Outpost.com. However there are some typos since they refer to the discs as DVD-RAM at least once on that page. That is incorrect, the discs are in fact DVD-R.

Have you used the discs? How are the results?

I ordered a few of these (in anticipation of mine coming): http://www.shop4tech.com/cgi-bin/sho...p;subchoice_2=

They're smaller, but cheaper.

Mediastore.com has DVD-R media branded for Panasonic recorders:
http://www.mediastore.com/cdr/produc...5Fspec=dvd%2Dr

..at $20-30 per blank.

No idea if they will work in the new Apple drive, but I suspect that they should.

When I looked at their info, they claim it's "Compatible format for DVD-ROM master disc production", which would make it DVD-R authoring, which is INCOMPATIBLE with the superdrive. You want DVD-R general, which if Apple sells for about $10, you should be able to find for between $5-7. It might be hard to find DVD-R general discs since the first burners that use them just got shipped by apple.

CRAP! I'll try to cancel my order.

I did find some details on media that are key here: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multime...ring_media.pdf

DVD Media FAQ: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multime.../dvd-r_faq.htm

The DVR-103 (SuperDrive can only write to 4.7GB "General" media. General can only record with a 650nm recording sensitivity wavelength, whereas "Authoring" can only write with a 635nm recording sensitivity wavelength. The only other drive they make that supports the 650nm recording is the DVR-2000 (component DVD Recorder).

So..here's one that will work: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multime...dvs-r470sd.htm
It says General media with 650nm recording and even says, "Apple G4 Computer incorporating the DVD-R/RW Writer."

Jeff, It looks like that Fuji media will NOT work because it says that it's for authoring: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/61786

Doesn't look like that Mediastore disc will work either: http://www.mediastore.com/cdr/produc...5Fspec=dvd%2Dr

It is 3.95GB and the acrobat file I gave the URL for clearly states that the only discs that work are 4.7GB. Too bad it doesn't say Authoring or General.

I'm glad to see a 50 disk spindle will be available. A good reference for DVD overall is http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

That FAQ is huge and frequently updated. It's what brought me up to speed on DVD.

If you find a good supplier of the DVD-R general blanks, please post it! Good luck searching!

BTW, I'm not sure why this was moved here since we're talking about Recordable Digital Versital Discs that can be written to by a specific drive in the new PowerMac G4s.

I have been unable to find any discs that are available now for general use. I would think they must be out there, but I don't see any. Also, did you notice that the General use media was created specifically to make it impossible to do certain kinds of copies? Apple should work to get the ultra expensive one as a BTO option in the future (though hopefully it will go down in cost) or at least in the $10k+ systems they sell.

I now have information on one product coming to market soon:

While I have not found any place with a web store for General Use DVD-Rs, I know that Mitsui has a 4.7GB General Use DVD-R that will be available via their online store. Mitsui makes very high-quality media, which is great. However it's pretty expensive $30 per disc in Jewel Box form. They are label free and are gold (the best kind for shelf life I hear). They are gold on top, and they are a greenish gold on the recording surface. They will be sold in jewel cases individually, in 25 packs in jewel cases and in a 50 pack "beehive".
