Inconsistant Interface

Does it bother anyone else that the QT interface is very un-Maclike? It sort of relates to Final Cut but not totally. The buttons and lines are a little different. One of the great things about the Mac is it's consistancy of use. It seems to me if Apple is going to mess around with App interface design that gives license to every developer to do the same. Everyone has their own idea of what their interface should look like. This will make learning a new App that much more difficult. Don't get me wrong- I think QT4 looks cool. I just wish the whole Mac interface looked like it.

You know, I thought the same thing until I considered some of the possibilities. What if the QT4 interface is a precursor to the "advanced MacOS look and feel," of MacOSX? Only time will tell, but I would welcome a cool interface (customizable to taste, of course) for MacOSX. Not that I don't like the present Platinum look of 8.5.1, but with something as advanced as OSX, the interface should look as the OS feels ;-)

I agree. Looking closely at the Final Cut Pro walkthrough, you can see that the Window title bars are very NeXT-like. I suspect that OS X will have a "Final Cut" look. Also, notice the lack of any border around the windows! Pretty weird! I'd like to see an interface like this that supports "skins" ala MacAmp. That'd be pretty wild, (and more flexible than Kaleidoscope style tweaks)

What I love about the QT4 interface vs. even the cool interface of some other programs, is how smooth it feels. The drawer slides right out. Everything moves smoothly. It feels really well put together; but doesn't match the OS UI! I hope they could implement something as smooth as this interface into Mac OS X. APPLE!! You can jam pack a lot of features into Mac OS X, and we'll love it, but the interface is worth *so* much to the user. A cool interface would put other somputer users to shame. ;-)

Has it ever occured to you that the GUI can't be standard cause it runs on windows as well as the Mac OS? This is why I think they chose the 'alternative' look and feel. I really think it's sweet, and I hope they continue down this road. Also, I think about Apple's entire multimedia, the Apple CD player, the DVD player, Final Cut, and now QT all have 'alternative' GUIs. I think it's just them standardizing not to be standard in the mulitmedia world. Just some thoughts for ya.

Good point RE:QT4 being a cross platform interface on Mac & PC. Hadn't considered it. Although I really hope Apple adopts QT4's new design as the standard Mac look and feel.
When I was at MacWorld SF I spoke with the guy demoing Final Cut. I asked him if FC was the way apple was headed GUI-wise. He wouldn't give me a straight answer. Don't know if this was due to QT4 or what.

Do you all really think Apple or any significant representative of Apple Computer Inc. (mind you that it's "Inc." and not "Corp." :-)) will take heed of your "bitching" and "griping"? I think not. ;-) Salut.
Oh, QT4 is the look of the future.

If Apple is going to standardise that UI, they will have to find a way to make it run smoothly on pre-Yosemite Macs. Even on my G3 233 the redraw and animated drawers are very slow.
Others did manage to make complex, but still very fast interfaces, e.g. MacAmp and KPT Effects.

Remember: Apple has only committed to serving OSX on G3s, so if this is an interface to be standardized on then a G3/233 would be the absolute lowend, even though it is not right now.
I don't know about KPT's interface being very smooth. Yeah the controls are neat looking, but the way that it tries to update when you let up on the button to move the mouse is bothersome.
I would think that several issues about interface will be dealt with come time for actual release time. I see at least another 3 betas until then. Cheers ;-)
