I'm flying home tomorrow morning to see my family. Is there anything special to know about taking a MiniDV videocamera through security? I want to put it in my carry on, and have some tapes with content I don't want to lose. Will the x-ray machines erase them or any pics or mpegs on the flash card? Anything else relevant would be nice to know also. Thanks

i did some searching around and every site seems to agree that x-rays shouldn't do any harm to your DV tapes. one site said it was better to be safe than sorry, but i couldn't find any links to people crying about their wiped tapes. the x-ray machine isn't one big magnetic field machine, so i don't think you have to worry too much.
if you're still paranoid, you could always ask them to hand inspect the gear, but they may want to send it thru the machine anyhow.

(this is based on found information. i've never traveled with my DV-cam, so i have no first hand experience in this matter)

mine all made it back from last years trip in one piece, and i went through about 14 major airports. if you keep them all together in a small bag in your carry-on, then get them out when you're going through, they'll see that they're okay for you

you could slip those DV tapes and the flash card into your pockets. I don't think the security folks would like to see someone slinking around, stuffing stuff in their pockets right before sending their bag(s) through the x-ray. so to be on the safe side, I'd put the DV tapes and flash in your pockets before you get near security. just my thoughts. these people aren't very well educated and are usually on a power trip, which means anything can set them on the crazy trail.

cool, thanks for all the information
I'll post some pics when I get back, and hopefully some close up video of tiger or white shark; but I doubt I'll be that lucky. Anybody know any crazy pothead scuba divers on Kauai that know where to go for the sharks?
