Some sound problems in QT4 and a question

When I run mp3s in QT4, it always seems to occasionally stutter even if I'm not doing anything - particularly during hard disk reads, although not always, perhaps one in every six reads. This latest public release is much better in that regard than the last beta I had, b18, which was terrible stutter-wise. Does anyone know if there's any way to, say, increase the cache of the file being played which QuickTime Player reads? I'm thinking that if I can just get it to load about a meg at a time, it wouldn't have the stuttering-at-loading problem.

Also: Could someone tell me what the three-way radio buttons just to the left of the timer are for? I've put it in all three positions and not noticed anything different.

If responses could be cross-emailed to me at yurtle@bellatlantic.net I would appreciate it.

I believe I have discovered the problem, but I still need some help. I was playing the mp3 from an external 18 gig, running on an Adaptec SCSI UW PCI card. When I copied the file to my 4gig APS unit on the standard SCSI bus, the stuttering disappeared - it was beautiful, but irritating because there's no way I'm going to copy stuff from the 18 gig to the 4 gig whenever I want to hear it. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I'm assuming that QuickTime Player just isn't used to how the 18 gig drive works or something, because from my experience it is actually much faster than the 4 gig.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
