Importing would be a hassle - and you wold have to render all of the footage back to DV if you are using iMovie or FCP... Actually there are ways around having to re-render it in FCP, but that just adds complexity to an already complex job (video editing)
I would say that if you are serious about making movies or videos stay away from the DVD (MPEG2) cams until MPEG2 is natively supported by FCP or iMovie.
Personally I prefer the Canon line of DV cams as I feel that they have the best color re-production of all the DV cams - some people prefer the Sony models, but I feel that they have a noticible blue cast on the image, and they do not re-produce reds nearly as well as the Canon line of cameras.
