OK,
With the advent of Apple's new DVD burners I realized that soon I will have the opportunity to burn roughly 150 hours worth of music on a single disc. (whoa!)
What I don't know is what sources exist for playback? Will Apex'sMp3 capable DVD player be able to read it? Has anyone heard about portable DVD players being able to handle Mp3's? What are my other options beyond having to use my computer?
Hybrid CD/Mp3 players seem to be hitting the street on a daily basis, and I am considering buying one. However this realization hit me last night and now it seems like I should wait.
Even the best Mp3 players are having storage issues. The Nomad Jukebox will hold 6 gigs at a cost of $700, but what I'm thinking of will hold 2 gigs at a cost of $10.00 per disc. It seems to me that the era of the compact disc is quickly waning, and that everyone should quickly invest in DVD developement. They could even rename the format to Digital Audio Disc, or DAD for short.
What does everyone think about this idea? Do you think the consumer public could handle storing their entire music collection onto a couple of discs? Do yo forsee any conflict with the current industry agendas?

Well figure 160kbps .mp3 files average 72 megs per hour.
That means a 4.7gig DVD-R can hold 65 hours of music.
A 680meg CD-R can hold 9.4 hours.
A 64-meg portable mp3 player can only hold 53 minutes.
The advantages of each? Well the DVD holds the most of course. CDs have portable and car players. And the portable flash players are solid state...still the only solution for running etc.
But you forget that you may get tired of certain songs on such a large collection and may want to replace them. Although I would think an APEX player would read a DVD-R, it probably won't read a DVD-RW. So you're sotra stuck.
To me the best solution is to use CD-RWs. You can then remove/replace/add songs as you like, and play it in your APEX for your home stereo, in the new portable mp3 CD players, and in the car mp3 players.
Besides, I don't think I could make a 65-hour music mix!!

well, I burn my music onto cd's simply for storage. My hard drive is only 10 gigs large, so I usually dump all of my songs onto CD, delete the stuff on my hardrive, then just copy those songs which are favorites of mine at the time. To be able to store so much on one disc would be terrific for me.

It's all second quality. We need a 250 disk CD-R/CD-RW MP3 player from Sony, but you will never see one because they have vested interests in the music industry. It pisses me off. I have been ripping all of my MP3's back into native songs and placing them on CD's and placing them into my 200 CD changer... It works really well, but there isn't a great front end...

Also, I like CD-R portable MP3 players because the medium is really cheap, and I can give a friend a ton of cool music and only ask for a buck and your cool. At $10 a pop, I'm going to stick to CD-R
