i know i'd be excited if i saw that thread, but i'm new and everything here excites me

i hope this isn't just a wasted thread
but here goes

i'm a musician with no friends who utilize computers for their production, hence i have no reliable advice on the subject. everthing ive read here is golden so i was looking for examples of other peoples rigs and feedback on how they are working for you all. also links to forums or even links to all your audio endeavors

so i've got some stuff on an old roland harddisk recorder, but the faders are broken and for mixing 48khz you can only use 6 tracks with audio on 4 bouncing down to 2
it's a real hassle because i usually deal around 12 to 16 tracks all on different virtual tracks. it's inevitable that i start mixing and bounce 3 drums with one bass, then bounce guitars on top of that and then ambience or keys and then vocals on the very top and then realize the drums weren't mixed right and a couple hours later i'm back at square one.

my dream deal would be one where i might have a live rig- amp speakers mixer- that i could route into a no bells and whistles recorder( best sound ( good ada convverters0 with the most analog inputs (xlr would be nice)
here i would be in a live situation and when the moment comes we record.
now i've got the performance then to bring to my mac, but as far as audio cards and the above recorder i'm lost in a sea of products

all the software i've seen is really cool, but i think the free pro tools is good for me till jaguar comes and the stienbergs and digidesigns go osx

wow long i know
hope this post isn't annoying

There is a Mac Audio website with a good forum somewhere, but I can't find the link right now. I will look and post again if I find it.

You have basically two choices, and your decision may be determined by what kind of Mac you have. You can either get one of the newer Firewire or USB interfaces, or one that includes an audio card and a breakout box.

The Firewire ones are nice; my friend has one and he has had no problems with it. The only downside would be that it is a bit costly. There are two out from MOTU right now, the 828 and the 896. These both have 8 ins and 8 outs I think; the 896 has all xlr's and the 828 has two xlr's and the rest 1/4. Prices are around $700 (828) and $1200 (896).

And then there are a slew of internal audio cards/external connecting box combos.

The easiest way to choose will be to decide how many channels you need to simultaneously record, and your price range.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.
