Making VCDs?

My in-laws are looking to digitize their old VHS tapes and make them Mac-playable. I'm thinking VCDs would be the best because they'll also play in most DVD players if they ever get one. However, I've never used a VCD. Are they interactive like DVDs? If so, what app do you make the interface with? We've got iMovie for editing.

Any links to resources out on the web would help a lot. I've seen some for windoze, how about us?

VCD's are somewhat "pixilated” they look kind of rough, nothing like DVD. I would say the quality is slightly less than VHS. And from what I've seen they are not interactive at all. They are just like playing a VHS tape. Press play and it goes...

As for playing them on a DVD player... Just because a DVD player says it will play VCD's doesn't mean will play VCD's on CD-R's. My DVD player clamed it will play VCDs but it won't play any CD-R's, so I'm out of luck with burned VCD's. (I was aware of this before I bought it, Consumer Reports rated it as the best DVD player for playing Damaged DVDs, and that's why I got it) well anyway...

In order to encode video into VCD standard you need software, which is pretty expensive. Astarte' sells (or did sell) M-Pack which would encode to MPEG-1. But if you can wait a couple months, Apple is supposed to release a new version of Quicktime which will have support for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding and decoding.

I hope this helped. The Astarte stuff can be found at www.astarte.de (incase you didn't know, Apple acquired Astarte's DVD division recently)

There are apparently some CD-RW that will work and some brands of CDR work better than others in certain brands of DVD players. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a forum that lists DVD brands and CD brands to let you know which ones work with which. The advce I get consistently, which I am passing on to you, is Trys bunch of CDs in a bunch of different DVD players and see which one works for you. Not terribly helpful, but better to have some guidance in a void.

Try this link http://www.videocd2.com/
It's a Canadian company specializing in VCD's for mac, they let you try the software before you buy. Quality depends on your original, "garbage in = garbage out", and they can be made interactive. Many Pioneer DVD players will play VCD's on CD-R---TRY BEFORE you buy.

Here is a link I found about DVD players and VCDs. This list is the result of reader contributions so if you have a player not on the list you can add your comments.

The stand alone DVD-Player homeburned VCDs compability list

Thanks for the input so far guys. I'm sure my father-in-law has no idea about how time-consuming and hard-drive-space-eating converting home videos to CD will be. I'm sure DH and I will end up doing it. How much should we charge him?
