When you say you're afraid iMovie can't do everything you need, does that mean you don't want to buy it and find out it's not robust enough or does it not have enough options. If it's the former, then I suggest you try out iMovie 1.0.2. It has basically the same options as the 2.0 version. I think it's still available as a download from Apple.
