After using SoundJam MP and comparing it with iTunes, I have noticed several shortcomings of iTunes.
(1) Inability to encode from sound input
(2) No Kareoke
(3) No Equilizer, balance or bass & treble adjustment
(4) Cannot work on pre OS9 machines. (without installing patches)

Another shortcoming I noticed in both programs was their inability to change fonts hence lack of Language Kit support.

iTunes have many advantages over SoundJam MP and it is my MP3 player of choice.

I hope Apple is working on adding these great features on upcoming upgrades.

P.S. Maybe I am wrong. Some of these features maybe already available but I just haven't found them yet.
Any insights are appreciated.

I love the layout, it has typical apple polish and panache. the one window keeps everything nice and neat, but i won't use it past the exploration that i did when it was released. I use Audion, i've used Audion since version 1.0 and i will continue to use it. It's my experience that iToons would make a great mp3 utility to the first time user (or someone like my father, who's a doff with computers), it decomplicates things.

Can't wait till OSX when I can go beyond 30 character file names.
This limitation is troublesome in keeping my MP3 files in good order.

hi nickeltong,
you forget about the scriptability, it would be really helpful if iTunes was ready for applescript, just like SoundjamMP.

I just installed iTunes and I am pretty happy with it. I was pretty surprised at how well it plays in the background, considering that the MacOS doesn't multitask all that well.

I just wish that the installer would have asked if I wanted the Rio files installed, as I do not own a portable MP3 player.

nickeltong,
Your 100% on, 30 character file names suck! It's way better then 8.3 (like DOS), but now we are starting to look a little like DOS in this area.

For everything else, pipe it through a real sterio...

What's the big deal with short filenames ? Don't you guys use ID3 tags ?

I've got nearly 800 MP3s in my library, and 30-char filename have never been an issue. For a library this size, iTunes 'Browse' feature makes it the best MP3 player for finding and organising music

my question is. will itunes or diskburner burn a copy of a CD from a CD like toast will? ie. drag, drop, record? i really like being able to do that instead of encoding all of it to itunes, watching it encode them again (or whatever it does), etc.
