Hey,
We recently got a box to hook up to our TV to mute the cusswords. It is really nice because I don't have to listen to all the cussing and etc. I will listen to it if I have to but I really don't like to and I was wondering if there was any software that would essentially do the same thing on the DVD player in my Mac? This would be a major help! (Then I could watch DVDs on my laptop and mom would quit worrying...)
C'ya,

Trust me...I don't want this...but my mom won't let me watch DVD's on my PowerBook until I get this...She doesn't seem to understand the fact that I go to public schools where I hear more cuss words in 10 minutes than all the movies I've ever seen in my life combined...Oh, and the mute button is usually too late to mute a word...ya know, ya hear it and it's kinda too late to push the mute button? LOL HAHA YOUR SO DUMB SO GO LAUGH AT SOME OTHER POOR UNFORTUNATE KID WHO HAS STRICT PARENTS!!

Wow that would be some pretty impressive technology to impliment..to have speech recognition and then recognise all "cuss" words and mute them out...yet it would have to somehow recognise the words before they were spoken or else the sound would need to be delayed and would be out of sync with the video.

Basically I am guessing your box reads closed captioning, and mutes the sound for a few seconds when a swear comes up in the text. This of course is embedded in the video signal, and wouldn't work with non-close-captioned stations.

Of course this is entirely possible with DVDs, however it would have to look at the subtitles, but these are graphical not textual so it would need some type of OCR, and be integrated into the DVD playing software itself. Not entirely impossible, but you can bet money that it's not gonna happen. Stick with watching your Disney movies.

Well, you're partially right...it DOES read the closed-captioned which is embedded on the DVD and then mutes whenever the cuss words are about to be said and then cuts it back off in a few seconds. So if it's possible in a box and TV why isn't it possible with software on a laptop?

Because you are not outputting the video & audio signal that you would put into the box!

Maybe you should explain to your mom that she should be worrying about things more serious than cuss words, and that her hard-handed control over you will do more harm that good when you rebel from it someday. :-D

Moofman,
I have never heard of the box you have, please give me the name of the manufacturer.
I applaud your mom for trying to spare you from all the cursing. I find it interesting that Hollywood thinks it is okay for 13 y/o to listen to cursing when most parents would not allow it in their own homes. Your parents have given you a lot of responsibility just letting you go to this forum.--see Gee4orce response.
Good luck in finding this work around to the DVD player in your iMac.
I wish we could buy the airline movie edit, they are perfect for the home.
Hang in there,
Mike
