I have a Sony DCR-TRV20 with an OrangeLink PC Card going into a WallStreet G3 PowerBook. Import into (and camera playback control by) iMovie 1.0.2 is flawless.

Export to the camera is blocky-jumpy with constant beeping. Unusable.

I have minimized extensions, turned off AppleTalk, turned off sound sets and desktop picture in Appearance, virtual memory off, both PowerBook and camera on AC adapters. I tried allocating 126 Megs to iMovie.

I'm on OS 9.0.4 with 192 MB memory, 11 GB free, FireWire 2.4, OrangeLink FireWire drivers 1.1.2, QuickTime 4.1.2.

From the OrangeMicro website it seems (it's a little confusing...) that I'm told to enable FireWire Enabler 2.4, FireWire OrangeLink PC Card 1.1.2, and FireWire Support 2.4 while disabling FireWire CardBus Enabler 1.0.1 and FireWire OrangeLink Enabler 1.1.2. In that case the camera is not seen by iMovie at all. When I enable FireWire OrangeLink Enabler 1.1.2 the camera is recognized and all is well except for export. Disabling FireWire Enabler 2.4 seems to make no difference at all. I believe I've tried every combination.

I have tried both cardslots.

What am I missing?

thanks, rh

The most likley cause of your problems is the fact Apple doesn't support the DCR-TRV20 for use in iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Check out the list of supported camcorders here: http://www.apple.com/imovie/gear/

I have a similar problem with a supported camera, but on a Mac clone. It is a pretty fast 604e machine w/ an 18 gb 7200 rpm UW2 drive, 128mb RAM, OS 9 etc. It is just horrible on the export. The import is fine. I think it may just be time for a new machine, but if you are having the same problem as me I wonder if there is something we're both missing...
