Easiest suggestion is to get a USB Video capture Device such as the Interex XLR8 Interview 2.0 for about $80 and includes StrataVideo 4.5DV free with it, a bargain for the software alone. Check out: www.allusb.com for just about every analog video via USB device available but read the small print, a lot of them are PC only.

Some of the Mac capable ones are:

XLR8 Interview 2.0
EskapeLabs MyCapture
Avid Cinema USB
Belkin Videobus

The USB method is the only way of getting analog video into an iMac without having to resort to using DV (Camera or converter) at some stage in the process!

does that method affect the video quality? trying to avoid having to buy a DV camera here... and our local Mac dealer (known around our company as "the idiots" <g> ) says there's absolutely no way to do it, no, won't work, you gotta buy THIS and THIS and THIS too...

I'm certainly not going to say that " the idiots" are right 'cos for most of what they're saying they're probably NOT...but USB Video is certainly of lower quality than DV. There is also a bit more colour bleed etc...But for web delivery, ie: frame sizes smaller than 320x240, there will effectively be no difference except that "noisier" images (that is, images of lower quality) don't compress quite as well.

What is the destination for your video work?

destination is actually going two different directions here, one is for home/family use (pictures of the kid and the cat to send to grandma <g> ), but I could probably find $ for an iMac in the budget at work (local school district) if I can figure some way to make this go in a low-dollar manner.

thanks for the advice...

You can get what's called a media converter or a codec, sony is the only company i know of that makes one, and it will run you about $400, but it's still cheaper than a digital camera, the sony part number is DVMC-DA2 the idiots ought to be able to get it in stock.
