I have a 79 minutes DVD project made on IDVD 2 over MAC OS X 10.1 the burning
process is taking around 14 minutes but at the end of the burning process I am
getting this error message

Errors Found
The recording device reported the illegal request
buffer underrun (0X21, 0x02.)

The DVD media is operational but it lacks the last 49 seconds of the file

Does anyone know how to avoid this?

Buffer underun is when the burner is asking for data quicker than the HD can supply. I know little about burning DVDs but if possible burn at a slower speed to ensure that the HD can supply data to the burner fast enough.

Also what machine are you running? Did you allot a heap of RAM to iDVD 2 (may not solve problem but it couldn't hurt)? Also you HD may be very fragmented which causes such underruns.

Just supply a bit more info, since a new G4 with a superdrive should have ample HD data transfer to feed the burner.

All you know about me is what I've sold you.

I havent seen in the software the possibility of burning at a lower speed

A G4 with Mac OS X 10.1 with a super drive 256 MB RAM 60 GB HD

How do you do this?

I just bought the machine how cand this be done?

This appears to be a common problem for >60 min DVDs on iDVD2

see Apple's Discussion forums for iDVD for a lot of discussion/b*tching about it....

Your G4 with the 60 gig HD (7200 rpm IBM drive) is most likely in fine working order and should be able to supply data fast enough without breaking a sweat.

To allot more Ram, select iDVD 2's icon --> Command + I --> Drop down menu that will read "genereal information"...click and select memory --> put in number 100,000 or greater (if not already 100K) in the preffered size. In fact give it as much as you can afford...though the 256 total amount in your machine isn't that much to work with.

I say check out what <arn> is talking about, most likely you will find a better solution (or a least a reason behind the problem) at Apple's Forums.

does iDVD 2 even run in mac os 9? if not, then you won't be changing the ram partition. X takes what it can/wants. maybe 256 is just too low...

between the mpeg encoder and idvd, i used all available ram (1.5GB - os usage, etc) on last night's burn of a 43 minute DVD Video.

funnily though, when i tried to burn it with motion menus, it said the disk did not have enough room for all the data (3.3GB or so). now that was odd.

this is on the retail superdrive on the dp500 w/X 10.1.1

it's not your machine's fault
it's a huge bug with iDVD2
go to the apple discusion forums to learn more
