Can anybody recommend a good external microphone for a DV camcorder? A large part of my taping in theatrical productions so the sound at the back of the theater isn't great.

do the actors/actresses in these productions use microphones that go through a sound system? if so, the best audio might come from running a cable from an output on the sound system to your microphone in plug on your camera. it would be an awfully long extension cord, but it would sound pretty good. just a thought...

Unfortunately not. And the acoustics aren't that great either. Radio Shack has mikes on sale this month. I may pick up a couple of those.

Any other thoughs?

I highly recommend going to a music store to buy a microphone to use. Radio shack mics won't sound very good. For around $100 you should be able to buy a great sounding mic that will last alot longer. Another suggestion I have is to buy a steel bowl, you would normally use as a salad bowl. Cut a hole in the bottom,center the diameter of the mic head. Just put the mic head in there and point it at the actors, should sound great. When your done it should look and sound like the long range mics private investigaters use (in the movies)
