Does anyone know how to create an .mp3 out of the soundtrack from a QuickTime movie. Stumped.

As long as it's not an mpeg. In Quicktime pro you can file->export. Choose "sound to aiff". Then encode the aiff to mp3 in SJ, itunes etc. If its an mpeg then you can use bbDemux to get the audio out.

My installation of QuickTime has an MP3 codec and I think it's standard in QT 5. So, instead of choosing "sound to aiff", you should be able to choose "sound to MP3" and then there's a button that allows you to configure the settings.

What I find the easiest is to just open the Quicktime file in iTunes, then export it to MP3 from there. If Quicktime can read it, iTunes should be able to convert it.

It really depends on what type of file you are talking about. QuickTime is just a container file. It can contain one or more of over 200 media types. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can transcode from any of these codecs to any other.

To see what codec(s) your file uses, look at the properties panel (Command-J) for each track.

If your Quicktime movie is a .MOV you may actually be able to open it in iTunes and convert to MP3. I tried it with a QT movie with Sorenson Video and standard QT sound encoding and it worked a treat.
