I use iTunes 1.1 on my desktop G4 400 and my work Pismo 500. Both have similar RAM (256mb plus).
I cannnot understand why I get typically half the visuals frame rate on the G4 (12-18) that I get on the Pismo (25 plus).
At first I thought it might be the fact that my music library is MUCH larger on the G4. But I tried upping the memory allocation (to 60 MB) and still saw no marked improvement in my frame rates.
The visuals run so silky slick on my Pismo (even running an external 19" monitor) that it frustrates that I can't get the same results on my G4. If it makes any difference, the G4 is driving a 21" display with a Radeon card.
(I just realized this all sounds like a pretty pitiful complaint. "The caviar tastes better with the silver spoon than the gold one! Uh!" Bear in mind that the Pismo is a work machine. I just can't understand why my G4 isn't performing better.)

Yeah, I can't get much more than 15fps on my G4/450; frustrating. Even my Lombard 333 can manage 13fps. 25 is pretty amazing. Are you sure that you've got the same visual settings on both machines? I can get a fater (about 20) framerate if I turn on "Faster but rougher display" or whatever it is.

Yes, same settings on both machines. I have tried things with VM on/off, taking all mp3 files out of the library, adding huge allocations of memory, nothing makes a difference. The display is sooo smooth and fast on the Pismo, it sickens me when I get to the G4, which is of course where I use iTunes the most.
My hope is that with Altivec optimizations (fingers-crossed) when the OS X version of iTunes is released, we will see huge improvement. That said, it still makes no sense that the extra 100mhz on the Pismo would generate twice the framerate as the G4.
