Is it possible to capture DVD video into Final Cut Pro? If so, how?

I'm using Final Cut Pro 2 on a G3 with an internal DVD-ROM drive.

No. DVD's are encrypted and any software that did enable you to capture audio/video from them would probably be illegal (that doesn't mean such software doesn't exist, though).

it is possible to extract the dvd files using dvd extractor and translate them into quicktime files using a mpeg decoder, but then if you want audio you have to use and audio converter to change the dvd audio into a filetype that FCP will recognize. so the answer is no, you can not capture to FCP but it is possible to manipulate the files and get them into FCP.

if you would be interested in such programs give me an email, while i am sure there are copyright laws that prevent you from actually using the dvd video its always nice to possess such programs for scientific purposes of course

May I suggest a convenient albeit not perfect solution:
Purchase an analog to DV converter like Dazzle Hollywood or Formac Studio. Hook up the DVD player (external home version) with the regular video RCA plugs, and then FireWire the mother into FCP or iMovie. Use iDVD to record the stuff back onto the shiny disks of pleasure. The quality: Good. Features: All DVD features are ofcourse lost, but you did want the movie.
