For all you pro's out there who do this day in and day out, I made a 3 minute movie I would like to distribute on CDROM.

Has anyone figured out the best codec (and settings) to use to compress a 600mb dv file to play on Mac or pc via CDROM?

What size should it be to play smoothly right off the disc.

DVD (mpeg 4?)is most likely the best, but my budget won't allow it at this time.

Thanks-Brad

Although I'm not a pro here's my thought.
Since its only 3 min long. You can use just about any codec and stay within 650mb. Playing strait off a CD wil depend on the system. If you want it to play well on any old PC you may have to sacrifice some quality. If the machines are higher end. You have more flexibility. Sorenson 3 seems to have the best look at high quality but files can be big. Your 3 min will be fine(approx 400mb). Mpeg 1 (VCD) should work on any system. Quality is pretty good concidering(approx 30mb).

Mpegs are safe, select "toast vcd" from the export menu in QT pro. Simple and effective!

Brad,

What is your target audience baseline machine? Sorenson is dynamite, but is pretty processor intensive IIRC... Many folks are still on PII and 233 Mhz iMacs... Aim Low has always been a good rule of thumb. When I was doing CD ROM development a couple years back, we assumed the user would be on 2x CD ROM, and had great results with

Cinepak (Low key frame rate)
200K/Sec bitrate
11.025 kHz audio

This setting will play well on P90s and 604 PowerPCs, maybe even lower. It's nice to have a few old boxes around to test on. You can out put this setting from QuickTime Pro.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Thank you,
Now I'd better get to work and test all these great suggestions.

That QT Pro is earning it's keep.

I would like to keep this CDrom as compatable as possable, so I will test on a 4+ year old machine......must have one around her somewhere....

If it's only three minutes, you can use almost anything. Even the raw DV would fit on a standard CD.

Truth be told, for something like that, I'd use MPEG-1 myself. Size is not a concern, and nothing scales in size quite like MPEG-1 does. As an added bonus, you could turn it into a VCD, which should by playable in any standard DVD player.

I agree with Millennium; nothing is as cross compatible as MPEG1.

Any old wintel can play it, and most Macs can with no problems.

It is excellent quality, and size... what you might consider is using a CD card for distribution.

I put a 30 meg MPEG1 on a CD card for promotion overseas; apparently it's done really well. People love the CD card deal, so gimicky

But anyway; go MPEG1, and make it a VCD too. It makes it more troublesome to open on a Mac and some Windows machines (people have to find the AVSEQ0x.DAT file and open it), but it'll play on DVD players and so forth...

Even if you don't VCD it, I'd suggest MPEG1.

MPEG-1 it is. I'll put both on the same CD, that will cover it.
