I really like what I've read about Final Cut Pro 3, but I JUST paid $299 this Fall to upgrade from FCP 1.2.5 to 2.0. I understand Apple's ROI issues, but I thought recent upgraders would get a better break.
Oh well. $299 is still cheaper than some of the other upgrades I've paid for in the past. I guess it will delay the purchase of one of the new PowerBooks (677mhz version) just a little longer.

You think you got ripped off? I got my copy the day before 3.0 was released. I'd ordered it less than a week before via FedEx, and it got delayed due to "supply issues", so they must have had 3.0 ready to sell.
I've got e-mails into Apple about this. There's no appropriate e-mail address for concernd like this on the Website, so I'm firing the message off to every Apple e-mail address I can find, in hopes that someone will forward it on. If I get a response, I'll be sure to tell people.
I blame Apple for this. They should be announcing the software some reasonable length of time (at least a month) before it is released. People have a right to know exactly what they are buying, including whether or not it will be obsoleted by a new version being readied for release in one month). Yeah, it means sales will go down before software is released. Tough. Your right to sell software is not as important as my right to know what you're selling.

Apple's secrecy does nothing but piss off loyal customers; hardware is one thing, software is another.
I already had FCP2 for a long time, so it doesn't bother me; I've gotten a lot of use out of it.
However, I was at work today, and purchased another copy of FCP2 for them (it wasn't my decision to order it, so, eh... whatever).
About half an hour later I got a phone call saying FCP3 was released... grr.
Oh well. They can spare the cash... heh.
While it seems a nice upgrade; I don't think it'll do much for me.
There's no way I'll use OfflineRT, and my home system isn't fast enough for the real time editing *cough*, so while the dually can handle it, mine apparently can't... so that's no good either.
Apart from things like that, which are largely gimicky... FCP2 will do most people nicely.

Two things...
1.) For the people that just ordered FCP 2, have you opened up the software yet? If not, just exchange it for FCP 3... No big deal there if you haven't taken off the shrink-wrap (or it's still in the mail).
2.) Not that I know anything more than you all, but I had a feeling that FCP 3 was coming out sometime soon (obviously didn't know for sure, but the DV Expo seemed like it was gonna be the time). Apple is pushing OS X big time and this seems to be the "Key" app (from Apple) that wasn't ready to roll for OS X.

Looks like there's a special upgrade price if you bought FCP within the last month. $49, with proof of purchase and a downloadable coupon. Free shipping too.
It's not ideal at all, but it's something, I guess. Just one catch: you gotta act fast. The coupon has to be postmarked by December 31.

Three Words "send it back"
Call Apple if that doesn't work. They will just send you and upgrade if you can prove that you just purchased it.

FCP 3 isn't shipping for another month (22 business days, look it up) so there's your lead time.
i ordered the upgrade at 3:10 on the 4th, and the apple store said one day to ship. today, apple mailed me and said 22 business days to ship...
if you are a regular macsurfer, you knew it was coming at dv expo...or at least knew it would be prudent to wait, or prepare by buying 2.0 on ebay for a hefty discount, and upgrading to three (like i did for 2.0) when it came out.
yet sheesh, $300 bucks? after effects is a cheaper upgrade. but for X support and realtime? ok, i submit...

Complain, complain...
Sounds to me like Apple should have never released it, huh?
