hey guys, i'm in need for an external drive, mostly to try and crack into the dv world, and want to take the cheapest route possible--"building" my own with one of the 'kits" available.....

what is the cheapest kit available?i've seen some in the 150-dollar range.....are there any cheaper ones? and are they easy enough to use, so that a complete novice like myself can follow the instructions and not screw up too badly?

just wonderin.....thanks!

I bought the Pyro 1394 kit to go along with a Maxtor 60 GB drive. The Pyro kit was $140 from Outpost.com (also bought the drive from Outpost.com). The installation is very simple. Remove some screws, slide the pieces apart, drop the drive in, connect the power and data lines, put the pieces together again. After the first time it should take all of 3 minutes. The drive works as expected on my iMac DV SE and Pismo 500.

I also bought a Sony Spressa Firwire CD-RW at the same time. The Sony and Pyro drive enclosures are identical, except for color.
