You have downloaded an avi that uses a codec not currently on your machine. That is why you got the message that some software is not available. Open the file again and when you get that message click to continue and then open Movie Preferences or Movie Info, then Video Track, then Format. You will see what decompressor is missing. If it is DIV3 or MP43 then you will need to go to: http://www.mac.st/
and download the Mac DivX Player and WMP 6.3. If you have WMP7 already loaded just go ahead and install 6.3 anyway. When the Mac DivX Player opens it will tell you to find WMP. Navigate to version 6.3. After that use the DivX doctor in the Movie menu of the Player to fix the audio and then the movie will play, after saving the sound track in a separate .mov file.
If the format is DIVX then you are out of luck unless you are running OSX, for which a divx codec is available. Check Version Tracker to find the codec for OSX.
If it is Indeo I263 there is no way to play the video as no such codec was ever released for MacOS. If it is Indeo 4 or 5 then go to the Apple Quicktime site and search for Indeo. You should find those two codecs.

Thanks for the detailed information. Unfortunately the movies are in "IV50" format. Apparently there is no decoder for this format in Apple's Quicktime site.

Anyways, the friend who sent me these movies managed to convert them to quicktime format, so the problem is solved.

That's the Indeo Video format. Search on Apple's site or download sites for Indeo Video 5.
