I have heard most (if not all) DV camcorders won't let you record from analog sources onto their DV format, so what I am wondering is - doesnt sony (or other manufacturer) make a convertor box that lets you convert analog to digital video either onto DV tapes or directly to your computer?

Any info would be helpful

Thanx

Actually, if you have analog 8mm tapes, then the Sony Digital 8mm camcorders can play the analog tapes through the firewire connection. I've actually done this. The only disadvantage with the analog is that you don't get the time counter to set in/out points. There are boxes to adapt analog A/V outputs to Firewire, but they're expensive ($250-400) and you don't get device control. I'm still hoping these boxes will drop in price, since I bought a Hi8 less than a year before DV caught on.

Yeah, but I dont plan on buying one of the Digital 8 camcorders. I actually just bought one of those Sony DVMC-DA2 Digital to Analog convertors so I can take any video source and convert it with this and send it directly into my G4. It should be cool. No more Targa card and no more worrying about Fast hard drives and video capture. I am SOOOO sick of the hassle of optimizing systems for video capture I won't do it anymore.

I will eventually buy a good 3 chip Canon camcorder (either GL1 or XL1) and get rid of my Hi8, but with this convertor I can still use it and get rid of my Targa set-up.

Thanx everyone.

I not sure if the model number is the same in the US but the Sony TRV900 accepts analog A/V in and records it to (DV)tape and the DVMC-DA1 and DVMC-DA2 are boxes that convert analog to firewire. Or did I misunderstand the question?
