Sound delay with iMovie

I just picked up a Sony DVMC-DA1 converter box so I can import VHS tapes into iMovie. The video side of things works great, but the audio is delayed by a fraction of a second. Needless to say, the mismatch between the audio and the video is quite noticeable. I tried rebooting my system with only the MacOS 9.0.4 base extension set. This helped some, but the problem persists. I have tried also adjusting the sound input device in the sound control panel to each of the settings (DV, internal CD, and microphone) without any changes? Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem with importing DV streams into iMovie?

BTW, I am running a G4 350MHz with 128MB RAM. I am capturing onto a Maxtor 40MB slave drive. The Sony converter unit is plugged into the second Firewire port (the first has a CD-RW drive plugged into it).

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a bit unclear as to whether you are feeding audio and video in DVMC and feeding the encoded DV via firewire into your computer

OR

You're using the DVMC to encode the video but capturing the audio through tbe audio-in sockets?

Audio and Video must BOTH feed through the DVMC to be in sync(and even then there is no guarentee because the MiniDV format does NOT use locked audio. Only DVCAM and DVCPRO etc have LOCKED audio, hence the difference in price). The sound input device has no effect on audio being transferred via firewire and you must quit iMovie to change input device and then restart anyway for the change to take effect.

If you ARE feeding both through the DVMC, the sync error MAY be arising at the encoding stage which is therefore a fault with the DVMC box, it can be as simple as a faulty capacitor to throw the timing out!!! The only way to be sure is to try the box with a friend's iMac, if possible. I'm guessing you picked this up used anyway, yes?
